Overview

NOI is described on its official website as South Tyrol's growing innovation district, where companies, research institutes and the university work together to achieve sustainable development. It began in 2017 on the former location of Alumix, Bolzano's aluminium plant. The site hosts laboratories and R&D activity, and the Autonomous Province of Bolzano operates a Lab Bonus funding instrument for research and development in South Tyrolean companies and start-ups using the laboratories at NOI Techpark.

History

NOI began in 2017 on the former location of Alumix, Bolzano's aluminium plant. The site's earlier history includes the Montecatini Group beginning operation of the INA (Industria Nazionale Aluminia) factory in 1937 with 100 workers, in architecture described as a masterpiece of Italian Rationalism drawing on the Bauhaus architectural style. In 1991 the factory was sold to Alumix AG, and after Alumix went bankrupt the province of South Tyrol took over. In 2008 the ex-Alumix industrial area served as the venue for the European Biennale for Contemporary Art 'Manifesta 7'.
