Overview
Nodal Exchange is a derivatives exchange providing price, credit and liquidity risk management to participants in the North American commodities markets. According to its official website, it is a leader in innovation, having introduced the largest set of electric power locational (nodal) futures and options contracts and the largest set of environmental futures and options contracts in the world. The exchange currently offers over 1,000 power contracts on hundreds of unique locations, providing the most effective basis risk management available to market participants. It supports trading on over 120 futures and options products in over 70 environmental markets. Nodal also offers monthly futures and penultimate futures and options products on the Henry Hub natural gas market in 2,500 and 10,000 MMBTU lot sizes. All transactions on Nodal Exchange are cleared through its clearing house, Nodal Clear. Nodal Exchange's core offering is locational (nodal) power futures and options. There are thousands of distinct locations (nodes) in the North American organized wholesale electric markets. Nodal Exchange builds on the success of the existing Regional Transmission Organization / Independent System Operator (RTO / ISO) Day Ahead and Real Time markets by allowing its participants to trade cash-settled, fully standardized futures and options contracts in a cleared market, enabling market participants to effectively manage price, basis, and credit risk. Nodal Exchange offers contracts for on-peak and off-peak power at commercially significant hubs, zones, and nodes in the following electric markets: ISO-NE, NYISO, PJM, MISO, ERCOT, SPP and CAISO, as well as Mid-C. Futures contracts are for monthly and daily terms for both peak and off-peak at significant hubs and zones. Monthly contracts for select locations are available for some solar specific time periods as well as more granular off-peak periods (e.g., 7×8 and 2×16). Hourly contracts are available across 7 locations for PJM and ERCOT hubs. For each location, there are 24 contracts available representing a single hour of the day, with the next 5 days of expiries available for trading. Contracts are available for settlement to Locational Marginal Price (LMP), Energy + Congestion, or Energy only prices as published by the RTOs/ISOs, creating flexibility for participants to hedge positions for LMP and its components of Energy, Congestion, and Loss as appropriate. Monthly Options on the corresponding futures contracts are available for eight locations in ISO-NE, NYISO, PJM, MISO, and other markets. Beyond power, Nodal Exchange offers natural gas and environmental products. It provides monthly futures and penultimate futures and options products on the Henry Hub natural gas market in 2,500 and 10,000 MMBTU lot sizes. In environmental markets, it supports trading on over 120 futures and options products in over 70 environmental markets. The exchange also provides market data across asset classes to inform trading, monitor trends, and build historical models. Nodal Exchange provides its own trading platform, Nodal Access SM, a web-based, highly customizable solution for trading Power, Natural Gas, and Environmental contracts. The platform is flexible and secure and allows users to execute all screen-based trading across all asset classes without leaving Nodal. It is designed for rapid deployment, offering a range of innovative features, enabling faster access to new exchange functionality. The flexible environment allows users to easily customize their view, develop and deploy proprietary watchlists and portfolios, and support user defined strategies and complex order types. Premium features include straight-through processing via Nodal's Trade Confirmation API to auto-book fills, and surveillance connectivity. Nodal Exchange is headquartered in Tysons, Virginia, United States, and operates as a private company. It was founded in 2007.
