Overview
Nix-Gut Records is a German punk record label.
History
Nix-Gut Records was founded in 1994 by Jürgen Kamm, Michael Koch (Fraggle) and Andreas Kamm, members of the band S.i.K., as a DIY label to better distribute their first CD, "Vergiß es". The label professionalized around the turn of the millennium. The first full-time employee was hired in 2001. Starting from a handful of press articles and various items from friendly bands, Nix-Gut grew into a company with 20 permanent employees, 20 mini-jobs (400-euro jobs) and freelancers. The product range expanded to include oi!, ska, German rock and other rock scenes as well as streetwear. The label released compilations such as "Es lebe der Punk", "Chaos, Bier + Anarchie", "Punk – Das ist unser Kult", "Die deutsche Punkinvasion" and "Schlachtrufe BRD". This was the result of a "closeness to the scene" of that time, a commercial strategy that has since been abandoned. In 2013, Nix-Gut GmbH became ProTrade Integra GmbH, a blend of production, trade and integration. In addition to the Nix Gut online shop, Shut Up! and HDS Shop, a mail-order business more closely serving the German rock market, were part of the operation. The label name is based on a song by Frei.Wild, with whom the company began working in 2009. The label continues to operate under the name Nix-Gut Records, although records are released only sporadically. In 2017, the online shop Trading Goblin was added, specializing in collectible card and board games. The company now employs around 60 people, about half of whom are severely disabled and about half of whom have a migration background. Parallel projects included the online community Chaotenzentrale, which Nix-Gut GmbH operated and which shared a user database with Abgefuckt-liebe-dich; access to chaotenzentrale.de was interrupted in June 2013. In May 2007 the first issue of the fanzine Taugenix, specializing in the German punk scene, was published by Nix-Gut. It provided information about German punk bands, vegan recipes and other content. Each issue also included a CD with about twenty songs by known and unknown German punk bands. The fanzine was discontinued in 2010 after eleven issues; the former editors now design the webzine Ugly-Punk. A platform called Punkload offered only music from the punk, ska and oi! scenes. Songs could be listened to for 30 seconds and downloaded in the usual formats for a surcharge. Nix-Gut has been recognized as a gemeinnützige GmbH, a non-profit limited company, since 2005. Profits are donated to social work, particularly the care of ten permanently employed severely disabled people, who are mainly employed in the textile printing shop that has been in operation since December 2007. Legal controversies marked the label's history. In 2002, a woman filed a complaint against Nix-Gut after finding the catalogue in her son's room, showing products with swastikas crossed out or crushed by a fist. In August 2005, the Nix-Gut warehouse was searched by police and around 17,000 items were confiscated. At the request of the Stuttgart public prosecutor's office, the Stuttgart regional court convicted Jürgen Kamm on 29 September 2006 of promoting symbols of unconstitutional organizations and imposed a total fine of 3,600 euros. The ruling met with strong reactions from politicians and many criminal lawyers because this interpretation was not covered by the legal purpose of Section 86a of the Criminal Code. The BGH granted the appeal on 15 March 2007 and overturned the lower court's decision. This clarified the legal situation in Germany and meant that wearing anti-fascist symbols is permitted. The Nix-Gut Mailorder responded to the first conviction by starting to offer various related items for sale. A benefit sampler was also released, the proceeds of which were intended to offset ongoing legal costs.
