Overview

Nitchitsu Co., Ltd. (株式会社ニッチツ) is a Japanese industrial company headquartered in Minato, Tokyo. Its origins trace back to 1929, when Chosen Mining Development Co., Ltd. was established in Korea; the company was renamed Nitchitsu Mining Development Co., Ltd. in 1940 and expanded into domestic mine development. After the end of World War II in 1945 the company lost its overseas assets, and in 1950 it was re-established as Nitchitsu Mining Co., Ltd. with capital of 30 million yen. It listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1951 and on the Osaka Securities Exchange in 1953. Over the following decades Nitchitsu shifted its center of gravity from mining toward machinery. It established subsidiary Sansen Kogyo in 1964 and began operating the Emukae Plant; established Tokyo Netsukagaku Kogyo in 1966; and in 1970 formed Sansen Kiko and absorbed Sansen Kogyo, which became today's Machinery Division. In 1973 the Matsuura Plant began operation, the mining division was separated, and the company was renamed Nitchitsu Kogyo Co., Ltd. It absorbed Nitchitsu Mining Co., Ltd. in 1983 (Resources Development Division) and changed its name to Nitchitsu Co., Ltd. in 1989, also absorbing Nitchitsu Joyo Quarrying and Kinugawa Resources (Building Materials Division). Today the company describes itself as operating four main businesses: machinery-related, resources-related, real estate-related and materials-related. The machinery business designs and manufactures marine equipment such as hatch covers and hull blocks, general industrial machinery including air preheaters, and plant-related equipment, and also handles installation, construction and supervision of machinery. The resources business produces and sells high-silica products such as refined silica powder, using imported silica stone from India, China and Sri Lanka. The real estate business leases office buildings, and the materials business manufactures and sells the heat-resistant coating "Thermojin" and procures, processes and sells "Linatex" high-purity natural rubber sheet. Nitchitsu has obtained ISO 9001 certification at its Matsuura Plant (Machinery Division, 1997) and High-Silica Division (2009), and ISO 14001 certification at the Matsuura Plant (2005). It also received works approval from ClassNK, the Japanese classification society, for hatch cover manufacturing at the Matsuura Plant. In 2020 it transitioned to a company with an audit and supervisory committee, and in 2022 it moved to the Tokyo Stock Exchange Standard Market. The company positions itself around uncompromising monozukuri — manufacturing that supports the foundations of society — and aims to remain a company needed by society through reliable technology and continuous self-improvement.

History

Nitchitsu's history begins in 1929 with the founding of Chosen Mining Development Co., Ltd. in Korea. In 1940 the company changed its name to Nitchitsu Mining Development Co., Ltd. and turned its attention to mine development within Japan. The end of World War II in 1945 brought the loss of its overseas assets, and in 1950 the business was re-established as Nitchitsu Mining Co., Ltd. with capital of 30 million yen. It listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1951 and on the Osaka Securities Exchange in 1953. From the 1960s the company diversified and shifted toward machinery. In 1964 it established the subsidiary Sansen Kogyo Co., Ltd. and began operating the Emukae Plant. In 1966 it established Tokyo Netsukagaku Kogyo Co., Ltd. In 1970 it established Sansen Kiko Co., Ltd. and absorbed Sansen Kogyo Co., Ltd., forming what is now the Machinery Division. In 1973 the Matsuura Plant began operation, the mining division was separated, and the company was renamed Nitchitsu Kogyo Co., Ltd. In 1975 capital was increased to 1.1 billion yen. In 1983 the company absorbed Nitchitsu Mining Co., Ltd., creating the Resources Development Division. In 1989 it changed its name to Nitchitsu Co., Ltd. and absorbed Nitchitsu Joyo Quarrying Co., Ltd. and Kinugawa Resources Co., Ltd., forming the Building Materials Division. In 1997 the Matsuura Plant of the Machinery Division obtained ISO 9001 certification. The company marked its 50th anniversary in 2000. In 2001 it absorbed High-Silica Kogyo Co., Ltd., which became the High-Silica Division. In 2003 it consolidated its listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. In 2004 it relocated its head office. In 2005 the Matsuura Plant obtained ISO 14001 certification and works approval from ClassNK for hatch cover manufacturing. In 2009 the High-Silica Division obtained ISO 9001 certification. In 2020 the company transitioned to a company with an audit and supervisory committee, and in 2022 it moved to the Tokyo Stock Exchange Standard Market. Today Nitchitsu operates four main businesses — machinery-related, resources-related, real estate-related and materials-related — and describes its purpose as supporting the foundations of monozukuri, the manufacturing that underpins society.
