Overview
NISSEI HOMMA MACHINERY CO., LTD. (日精ホンママシナリー株式会社) is a Japanese machine tool manufacturer headquartered at 1242 Nishifutami, Futami-cho, Akashi, Hyogo. It designs and builds large, special-purpose machine tools — the so-called "mother machines" that make other machines — for demanding production sites in aviation, aerospace, energy, construction, shipbuilding, automotive, railway and bridge-building industries. Its product line includes vertical lathes (立旋盤), turning centers, five-face machining centers and plano-millers, multi-tasking machines, and other dedicated machines, with table diameters and machining lengths selectable from roughly φ1,100 mm up to φ9,000 mm and lengths up to 30,000 mm. The company traces its origins to 1946, when the predecessor business was founded as Honma Foundry (本間鋳造所). It was incorporated in 1957 as Honma Metal Industry Co., Ltd. (本間金属工業株式会社), built the Tagawa plant in Osaka in 1959 and the Akashi plant in 1963, and changed its name to Homma Machinery Co., Ltd. (ホンマ・マシナリー株式会社) in 2008. After the 2008 financial crisis and difficulties collecting payments on Chinese and Indian orders, Homma Machinery filed for civil rehabilitation (民事再生法) at the Osaka District Court on 27 April 2017. Nissei Plastic Industrial Co., Ltd., based in Sakaki, Nagano, was selected as rehabilitation sponsor, and on 9 August 2017 it established Nissei Homma Machinery as a successor company. On 2 October 2017 Nissei Homma Machinery took over all of Homma Machinery's business, with its head office placed inside the Akashi works. Homma Machinery's legal entity was dissolved on 4 September 2019. Nissei Homma Machinery is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nissei Plastic Industrial Co., Ltd. and part of the GMS Group. It is known in particular for its Shinkansen wheel milling machines: the company states that 100% of the wheels for the Shinkansen — a component machined to one-thousandth-of-a-millimeter precision — are produced on its machines. Its accumulated expertise in large and special-purpose machinery and special steel processing is being applied to new fields such as nuclear power and medical equipment. The company obtained ISO 9001:2015 certification on 1 March 2019 and maintains a global network serving customers in Japan and overseas.
History
The business that became Nissei Homma Machinery began in February 1946 as Honma Foundry (本間鋳造所). In May 1957 it was reorganized into a corporation, Honma Metal Industry Co., Ltd. (本間金属工業株式会社). The company built the Tagawa plant in Tagawa, Yodogawa-ku, Osaka in August 1959, and constructed the Akashi plant (later the Akashi works) in August 1963. In June 1970 the head office building and head office plant were expanded. In May 2008 the company changed its name to Homma Machinery Co., Ltd. (ホンマ・マシナリー株式会社). Homma Machinery had sales of 3,513.56 million yen in the fiscal year ending April 1992. After the collapse of the bubble economy, orders from various industries fell sharply, and the company's situation worsened as key customers moved manufacturing bases overseas. It responded by strengthening overseas orders and, in 2006, received financing from a fund backed by financial institutions in Osaka Prefecture. These measures helped sales recover to about 3 billion yen in the fiscal year ending April 2007. However, the 2008 Lehman Shock caused orders to fall again, and collection of funds related to orders from China and India became difficult, worsening its cash flow. On 27 April 2017 Homma Machinery filed for application of the Civil Rehabilitation Act with the Osaka District Court and received a preservation management order the same day. As part of its rehabilitation, Homma Machinery closed its head office plant in Yodogawa-ku, Osaka, and consolidated manufacturing at the Akashi works. Nissei Plastic Industrial Co., Ltd., headquartered in Sakaki, Nagano, was selected as the civil rehabilitation sponsor. Nissei Plastic Industrial established Nissei Homma Machinery Co., Ltd. on 9 August 2017 as a successor company to take over the business. On 2 October 2017 Nissei Homma Machinery took over all of the business operated by Homma Machinery, and its head office was placed inside the Akashi works. Homma Machinery continued its civil rehabilitation proceedings, moving its registered head office to Osaka's Kitahama district on 7 March 2018 and back to Tagawa, Yodogawa-ku, Osaka on 17 April 2018, before its legal personality was dissolved on 4 September 2019. Since beginning operations in October 2017, Nissei Homma Machinery has continued the predecessor's tradition of fully custom-made, made-to-order machine tools. It obtained ISO 9001:2015 certification on 1 March 2019. The company states that it has earned high trust from various industries and that the Nissei Homma brand is now recognized around the world. It positions itself as a provider of original mother machines that support Japanese manufacturing and aims to contribute to a prosperous future for humanity through its unique creativity and understanding of customer needs.
