Overview

Nippon PS Co., Ltd. (株式会社日本ピーエス) is a Japanese construction and engineering company headquartered in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture, whose business centers on prestressed concrete (PC) technology. Founded on 1 April 1952 under the name Tsuruga P.S. Concrete Co., Ltd., the company began producing PC concrete products using the Freyssinet anchorage method and has since grown into a nationwide specialist in PC bridges, precast concrete members, and related civil-engineering works. The company's identity is closely tied to the history of prestressed concrete in Japan. In 1953 it completed Jūgō Bridge (十郷橋), described by the company as Japan's first road bridge built with the post-tensioning method — a structure later recognized as a Civil Engineering Heritage by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers in 2014. The firm renamed itself Nippon P.S. Concrete Co., Ltd. in 1954 and adopted its current name, Nippon PS Co., Ltd., in 1992. Nippon PS operates a nationwide network of branches and sales offices spanning Tohoku, Tokyo, Chubu, Hokuriku, Kansai, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu, supported by factories including its headquarters plant in Tsuruga and newer bases completed for its 70th anniversary in 2022. Its portfolio covers bridges, containers, buildings, disaster-prevention facilities, structural repair, reinforcement and renewal, and port and airport structures. The company also markets proprietary technologies such as the Grout Filling Inspection System using broadband ultrasonic methods, Super Preten®, the PC-Unit Pier Construction Method®, and ultra-durable precast PC piers. Beyond construction, Nippon PS promotes technical development and public engagement, operating the 'Bridge Museum' (橋のミュージアム) visitor facility, running a women's patrol team, and holding an annual technical symposium. It maintains ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications and has received recognition such as 'Excellent Construction Performance Company' designations from regional development bureaus. The company remains privately held and is not listed on a stock exchange.

History

Nippon PS Co., Ltd. traces its origins to 1 April 1952, when it was founded as Tsuruga P.S. Concrete Co., Ltd. (敦賀ピー・エス・コンクリート株式会社) with Yoshio Arima as president. The company began producing P.S. concrete products using the Freyssinet anchorage method, placing it among the early adopters of prestressed concrete technology in Japan. In 1953 the company received registration approval from the Fukui Prefectural Governor and completed Jūgō Bridge (十郷橋), which it describes as Japan's first road bridge built using the post-tensioning method. The following year, 1954, the company changed its name to Nippon P.S. Concrete Co., Ltd. (日本ピー・エス・コンクリート株式会社). In 1955 it relocated its head office in connection with the construction of a new plant, and in 1956 it opened an Osaka sales office (now the Kansai Branch) and obtained registration approval from the Minister of Construction. Through the late 1950s and 1960s the company expanded its sales network across Japan: Nagoya (1958, now Chubu Branch), Tokyo (1958, now Tokyo Branch), Fukuoka (1959, now Kyushu Branch), Hokuriku (1964, now Hokuriku Branch) and Sendai (1971, now Tohoku Branch). It also obtained Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) display factory approvals for prestressed concrete bridge girders in 1961 (JIS A 5313) and 1965 (JIS A 5319, JIS A 5316). A Hiroshima office followed in 1975 (now Chugoku Branch). In 1982 Yoshio Arima became chairman and Ryota Kubo became the second president. A new head office building was completed in 1987. In 1992, on the company's 40th anniversary, the name was changed to Nippon PS Co., Ltd. (株式会社日本ピーエス). The company obtained ISO 9001 certification in 1998 and completed a new Tsuruga plant (now the Second BASE) in 2000. It marked its 50th anniversary in 2002 and obtained ISO 14001 certification in 2004. In 2008 it acquired JIS conformity certification (JIS A 5308, JIS A 5373); Ryota Kubo became chairman and Takashi Muro became the third president. In 2011 the Chubu, Chugoku and Kyushu branches obtained OHSAS 18001 certification for occupational health and safety management. The company celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2012. In 2014 Jūgō Bridge was recognized as a Civil Engineering Heritage by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers as Japan's first post-tensioned road bridge. Hiroshi Arima became the fourth president in 2016. In 2017 the company made H&B System Co., Ltd. a wholly owned subsidiary, and in 2020 it established Nippon PS Technologies Co., Ltd. as a subsidiary. In 2022, its 70th anniversary year, it completed new plants (the First and Third BASE) and opened a public relations and visitor facility, the 'Bridge Museum' (橋のミュージアム).
