Overview
Nikko Hotels, also known as Nikko Hotels International, is a Japanese-origin international hospitality brand whose portfolio consists principally of Hotel Nikko properties, together with related Grand Nikko, Nikko Style and affiliated Hotel Royal properties. The chain serves business, leisure, group and resort guests through full-service hotels in Japan and overseas markets. The brand began operations in 1972 as the international hotel business of Japan Airlines. Its first property was located in Jakarta, giving the chain an overseas base from the outset. A Nikko-operated hotel opened in Japan in 1973, while some properties that later carried the Nikko name predated the formal international network; Ginza Nikko, for example, opened in 1959. This combination of domestic Japanese hotels and overseas properties became central to the brand's identity. Nikko Hotels developed during a period when Japanese corporations were expanding their international presence and Japanese travelers and companies were increasingly active abroad. Its hotels commonly occupied major urban, airport, resort and convention locations. The network included full-service accommodation, restaurants, meeting facilities and other hospitality services, with a positioning centered on dependable Japanese hospitality and upper-upscale business and leisure travel rather than on a single narrowly defined hotel format. The business was historically connected to Japan Airlines Development Company Limited, which was renamed JAL Hotels in the 1990s. In 2010, the hotel business was acquired by Okura Hotels and became part of the Okura Nikko Hotel Management structure. This ownership transition moved Nikko from being primarily identified with an airline group to being managed within a broader Japanese hotel portfolio. The group relationship also linked Nikko with Okura-branded hotels and other hospitality assets. The portfolio has changed over time. Properties have opened, closed, changed managers or been rebranded by their owners. Former Nikko properties included hotels in Paris, Düsseldorf, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Mexico City, Hanoi, Singapore, Atlanta and other locations. These changes reflect the management-contract nature of much of the international hotel industry: the Nikko name may be used by a property for a period without the brand permanently owning the underlying real estate. The Japanese network includes Hotel Nikko properties in major cities and resort destinations, as well as Grand Nikko hotels and the Nikko Style concept. Overseas locations listed for the chain include China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Guam, Palau and the United States. The brand's geographic emphasis remains Asia-Pacific, supplemented by selected international destinations. Its offering spans city hotels, airport hotels, resort properties and convention-oriented accommodation. Nikko Hotels is therefore best understood as a branded hotel and management network rather than a single real-estate-owning corporation. Its value proposition is built around Japanese hospitality heritage, international operating experience, full-service facilities and a broad range of locations. The brand remains active under Okura Nikko Hotel Management, although individual properties and the precise international footprint can change as management agreements expire or new projects enter the portfolio.
History
Nikko Hotels International was established as the international hotel brand of Japan Airlines and began operations in 1972. Its first property was in Jakarta, reflecting the airline group's international orientation and the importance of Southeast Asia to Japanese business and tourism. The first Nikko-operated property in Japan opened in 1973. The formal network therefore combined overseas expansion with a growing domestic Japanese presence. Some hotels associated with the Nikko name existed before the international organization was created. Ginza Nikko, opened in 1959, is identified as one of the older Nikko properties. Over time, the network grew through a mixture of hotels operated by Nikko and properties owned or developed by other entities under management or affiliation arrangements. This model enabled the brand to enter markets without owning every hotel building. The hotel business was formerly connected to Japan Airlines Development Company Limited. That company was renamed JAL Hotels during the 1990s, and the Nikko network continued as part of the airline-related hotel organization. The brand expanded across Japanese cities, resort destinations and transportation-linked locations while also establishing a presence in China, Southeast Asia, Taiwan, the Pacific and North America. Its hotels generally offered full-service accommodation, food and beverage operations, banqueting, meetings and business-travel facilities. A major corporate change occurred in 2010, when the hotel business was acquired by Okura Hotels. Nikko subsequently became a subsidiary within the Okura-related hotel structure and was managed through Okura Nikko Hotel Management. The transition altered the corporate context of the brand: it was no longer primarily a hotel arm identified with Japan Airlines, but part of a wider Japanese hospitality group that also included Okura and associated properties. The portfolio has continued to evolve through management changes and rebranding. Hotel Nikko Jakarta ended its management arrangement in January 2012 and became Pullman Jakarta Thamrin CBD. Hotel Nikko Hong Kong changed identity after Nikko management ended in June 2014, becoming New World Millennium Hong Kong. Grand Nikko Bali ceased to be managed under the brand in January 2017 and became Hilton Bali Resort. Hotel Nikko Hanoi ended its management arrangement in December 2018 and became Hotel du Parc Hanoi. Hotel Nikko Düsseldorf followed in February 2022, becoming Clayton Hotel Düsseldorf. Other former properties included hotels in Paris, Kuala Lumpur, Mexico City, Atlanta, Manila, Singapore and elsewhere. The active and listed portfolio includes numerous Japanese hotels, such as properties in Sapporo, Obihiro, Tsukuba, Tokyo-area destinations, Narita, Osaka, Kyoto, Kansai Airport, Fukuoka, Okinawa and other cities. The international network listed for the brand includes hotels in China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Guam, Palau and San Francisco. The group has also used related labels such as Grand Nikko and Nikko Style to distinguish resort, upscale and lifestyle-oriented concepts within the broader portfolio. Nikko Hotels' history is consequently a history of international expansion, corporate transition and portfolio management. The brand's core identity rests on Japanese hospitality and full-service hotels, while its physical presence depends on individual development and management agreements. Properties can therefore leave the system without ending the brand itself. Under Okura Nikko Hotel Management, Nikko remains an active international hotel brand with its strongest concentration in Japan and the wider Asia-Pacific region.

Hotel Nikko
Hotel Nikko is the core brand and the name used by the largest group of properties in the network. These hotels generally serve business and leisure travelers in urban, airport, resort and convention locations. Typical facilities include guest rooms, restaurants, meeting spaces, banquets and other full-service hospitality amenities. The portfolio is especially concentrated in Japan and Asia-Pacific, although the brand has also operated in North America and other international markets.
Upscale and resort hotel brand
Grand Nikko
Grand Nikko is a related Nikko-branded format used for larger upscale hotels and resort-oriented properties. Examples in the listed portfolio include Grand Nikko Tokyo Bay Maihama, Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba and Grand Nikko Awaji. The format is suited to destination stays, leisure travel, meetings and other occasions requiring extensive guest facilities.
Lifestyle hotel brand
Nikko Style
Nikko Style is a more lifestyle-oriented concept within the broader Nikko portfolio. Nikko Style Nagoya is listed as an example. The format extends the group beyond conventional business and convention hotels and is intended to provide a contemporary city-hotel experience while remaining connected to the Nikko hospitality system.
Affiliated hotel properties
Hotel Royal affiliates
Hotel Royal properties are identified as affiliates of Nikko Hotels in Southeast Asia. They broaden the network through affiliated or related properties rather than representing the standard Hotel Nikko naming format. The relationship illustrates the group's use of multiple hotel names and operating arrangements across regional markets.
