Overview

The Nihon Kobudo Kyokai (Japan Kobudo Association) is a Japanese organization founded on 17 February 1979, with the Nippon Budokan as its parent body, to preserve and promote kobudo as a cultural asset unique to Japan. It was formed through the unity of kobudo practitioners nationwide and has carried out activities such as the All Japan Kobudo Demonstration Tournament, the Japan Kobudo Technical Improvement Demonstration Tournament, other domestic tournaments, and international exchange programs. In 2019 a ceremony and reception were held in Tokyo to mark its 40th anniversary.

History

Japanese kobudo emerged from the late Heian through Kamakura and Muromachi periods as self-defense and combat techniques. After the Meiji era's sword ban and the collapse of the warrior class, many traditions faced a crisis of transmission, but certain schools preserved their lineages into the present. On 19 February 1978 the first All Japan Kobudo Demonstration Tournament was held at the Nippon Budokan. Around this time, calls grew among many involved parties for a central kobudo organization; led by the Nippon Budokan, a consultative body was established with representatives of kobudo schools and experts. On 17 February 1979, the Nihon Kobudo Kyokai was founded as the national umbrella organization for kobudo. Since its establishment, it has conducted activities for the preservation and promotion of kobudo, including the All Japan Kobudo Demonstration Tournament, the Japan Kobudo Technical Improvement Demonstration Tournament, other domestic tournaments, and international exchange programs. On 2 February 2019, a ceremony and reception celebrating the association's 40th anniversary were held at Hotel Metropolitan Edmont in Tokyo.
