History

Niels Bugges Kro is a Danish inn and restaurant located by Hald Lake and the Dollerup Hills. The current inn building was erected in 1872 by Frederik Krabbe, the owner of Hald Hovedgård, after drawings by architect Martin Nyrop. A south wing was later added, and in 1948 the north wing was added. The inn is named after Niels Bugge. The site's history as a hospitality venue likely began in the late 18th or early 19th century; a watermill was built around 1790 by Frederich Schinkel, and a modest inn, Bækkelund Kro, emerged shortly after. In 1936, a new owner renamed it Niels Bugges Kro. From 1936 to 2019, a nearby castle mound was called Niels Bugges Hald, but in May 2019 it reverted to Gammel Hald after archaeological investigations. In the mid-1980s, Gitte and Poul Nielsen took over the inn and improved the kitchen. In 2014, the inn was included in the Swedish White Guide, and this recognition was repeated in 2015 and 2016. In late 2016, Mads Emtkær Jensen, a newly graduated chef from the Michelin restaurant Studio at the Standard in Copenhagen, was hired as head chef. From early 2017, the kitchen was changed to a brasserie with French cuisine. In March 2018, the inn was taken over by an investor group including businessman Kim Krull Jørgensen. After months of renovation, it reopened in November 2018 with a new tenant. The inn continues to operate, offering dining, stays, and events.
