Overview
Nickelodeon New Zealand was a localized children's television channel serving viewers in New Zealand under the international Nickelodeon brand. It targeted children broadly between the ages of three and fourteen and was operated within Viacom's New Zealand television portfolio alongside MTV New Zealand and Comedy Central. The channel was designed to provide programming tailored to the New Zealand market while retaining Nickelodeon's established identity, including animated series, live-action children's entertainment and preschool programming. Before the dedicated New Zealand service launched, viewers had access to the Southeast Asian version of Nickelodeon. That feed originated from Singapore and became available in New Zealand in January 2000 through Sky Digital and UHF distribution. It was included in Sky's basic digital package and was later added to TelstraClear's cable offering in 2002. This earlier availability established Nickelodeon as a recognizable children's television proposition in the market, but it was not a fully localized New Zealand channel. Viacom announced in May 2006 that it would introduce a local Nickelodeon service. Nickelodeon New Zealand launched on 1 August 2006, replacing the Southeast Asian feed on Sky Television channel 041. The channel broadcast around the clock and combined Nickelodeon programming with a dedicated Nick Jr. block for younger children. During weekdays, Nick Jr. generally occupied the late-morning and early-afternoon schedule, while weekend programming was placed in the early morning. The arrangement allowed the channel to address both its core school-age audience and preschool viewers. The New Zealand service operated from Auckland and shared facilities with MTV New Zealand. Its local operation was relatively short-lived. In September 2010, MTV Networks New Zealand announced that it would close its New Zealand offices from 1 December 2010. The announcement affected the local operations of Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central, with responsibility for the portfolio moving to the company's Australian offices in Sydney. The change was an operating and regional-management consolidation rather than the disappearance of the Nickelodeon brand from New Zealand television. On 30 November 2010, Nickelodeon New Zealand ceased as a distinct local feed. From 1 December, the Australian version of Nickelodeon replaced it on the platform, and Nick Jr. launched as a separate service in New Zealand on the same day. New Zealand Nickelodeon scheduling has therefore been managed from Australia since the closure of the local channel. The former channel is best understood as a discontinued country-specific television service within the wider Nickelodeon network, rather than as an independent consumer-products company or apparel label.
History
Nickelodeon New Zealand developed from the earlier distribution of Nickelodeon's Southeast Asian service in New Zealand. That Singapore-based feed became available through Sky Digital and UHF in January 2000 and was included in Sky's basic digital package. In 2002, it was also distributed through TelstraClear's cable network. Although this arrangement gave New Zealand viewers access to Nickelodeon content, it did not constitute a dedicated local channel operation. In May 2006, Viacom announced plans for a localized Nickelodeon channel in New Zealand. The service launched on 1 August 2006 and replaced the Southeast Asian version on Sky Television channel 041. Operating from Auckland and sharing facilities with MTV New Zealand, it formed part of Viacom's local television portfolio. The channel broadcast continuously and was aimed at children aged approximately three to fourteen. Its schedule included Nickelodeon's general children's programming as well as a Nick Jr. block for preschool viewers. Nick Jr. aired during weekday daytime periods and in early-morning weekend slots, giving the service a distinct preschool component while maintaining Nickelodeon's broader family and school-age audience proposition. The local operation ended after Viacom reorganized its New Zealand activities. In September 2010, MTV Networks New Zealand announced the closure of its local offices from 1 December. Responsibility for Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central was to move to the company's Australian offices in Sydney. Nickelodeon New Zealand stopped broadcasting as a separate local feed on 30 November 2010. On the following day, the Australian Nickelodeon service took its place, and Nick Jr. launched separately in New Zealand. The brand consequently remained available in the market, but the dedicated New Zealand channel and local operating structure were discontinued.
