Last updated August 31, 2026
Overview
NiCE is an Israeli-American enterprise software company whose products help organizations manage customer interactions, contact-center operations, employee performance, digital engagement, and financial risk. Its best-known platform is CXone, a cloud contact-center-as-a-service offering that combines interaction management, routing, workforce optimization, analytics, automation, and artificial intelligence. The company also develops AI and customer-experience capabilities under the Enlighten and CXone Mpower brands, while its Actimize business addresses fraud prevention, financial-crime compliance, and risk management. The business began in Israel in 1986 as Neptune Intelligence Computer Engineering. The company initially developed communications and recording technologies, including systems for telephony environments and financial-services applications. Its early activities also included ATM software through the NICECom subsidiary. NICECom was sold to 3Com in 1994, helping establish the company as a focused provider of software and technology for enterprise communications and business operations. On October 14, 1991, the company had adopted the name NICE Systems Ltd., with the original acronym no longer used as an active expansion of the name. NiCE became publicly traded on Nasdaq in 1996 and subsequently expanded through a combination of internal development and acquisitions. The 2007 purchase of Actimize broadened the company into financial-crime and risk-management software. Acquisitions such as Fizzback and Merced Systems in 2011 strengthened customer-feedback, analytics, performance-management, and workforce-optimization capabilities. The 2016 acquisition of inContact was a major strategic shift toward cloud contact-center software and became the foundation for the later CXone platform. Mattersight, Brand Embassy, and MindTouch added behavioral analytics, digital engagement, and knowledge-management capabilities. The company sold its physical-security business in 2015; that unit became Qognify under new ownership. In 2016, the company changed its legal name to NiCE Ltd. Its strategy thereafter increasingly centered on cloud delivery, artificial intelligence, automation, and unified customer-experience management. CXone expanded from a contact-center platform into a broader operating environment for human agents, digital channels, analytics, self-service, workforce management, and AI-assisted workflows. NiCE has also developed partnerships with major technology providers, including Google Cloud, AWS, and ServiceNow. NiCE serves sectors such as financial services, telecommunications, healthcare, government, retail, travel, and other industries with large volumes of customer or citizen interactions. Its software is used for both external customer service and internal operational processes. The company has promoted AI-based automation through capabilities such as Enlighten, CXone Mpower, CXone Orchestrator, and AI-agent technologies associated with Cognigy. In 2025, it announced an agreement to acquire Cognigy, a Düsseldorf-based provider of conversational and agentic AI software, with the intention of integrating its technology into CXone while retaining standalone availability. Leadership changed at the end of 2024, when Scott Russell succeeded Barak Eilam as chief executive officer. The company continues to position itself around cloud migration, customer-experience transformation, workforce productivity, financial-crime prevention, and the controlled deployment of generative and agentic AI. Its principal competitive arena includes cloud contact-center and customer-experience software providers, workforce-management vendors, customer-data and analytics platforms, and specialized conversational-AI companies.
History
NiCE was established in Israel in 1986 as Neptune Intelligence Computer Engineering. Its early engineering work focused on communications and enterprise systems, including telephony voice recording and technologies for contact centers and financial-services organizations. Through its NICECom subsidiary, the company also developed ATM software. NICECom grew during the 1990s and was sold to 3Com in 1994. The company became publicly listed on Nasdaq in 1996. On October 14, 1991, the company adopted the name NICE Systems Ltd.; the original words behind the acronym were no longer actively used. Over time, its technology portfolio moved from specialized communications infrastructure toward software for customer interactions, business intelligence, analytics, and operational risk. The 2007 acquisition of Actimize established a significant financial-crime and risk-management business, serving areas such as fraud detection, compliance, and enterprise risk. The company broadened its customer-experience portfolio through acquisitions in the 2010s. Fizzback, acquired in 2011, provided customer-feedback technology that processed information from sources including social media. Merced Systems, acquired during the same year, added performance-management, analytics, and workforce-optimization software. In 2014, Zeevi Bregman left the CEO position and was succeeded by Barak Eilam, who had previously served as president. NiCE relocated its headquarters to a new waterfront office building in 2015. That year it also divested its physical-security business to Battery Ventures. The unit became Qognify and later changed ownership again. In 2016, the company changed its name to NiCE Ltd. and acquired inContact. The transaction was strategically important because inContact supplied cloud contact-center technology; Paul Jarman continued to lead the inContact division during integration. This business became central to NiCE's later CXone cloud platform. Further acquisitions filled out the customer-experience suite. Mattersight, acquired in 2018, contributed behavioral analytics and cloud software. Brand Embassy, acquired in 2019, strengthened digital engagement. MindTouch, announced as an acquisition in 2021, provided knowledge-management technology that NiCE subsequently branded CXone Expert. The company also developed partnerships with major cloud and enterprise-technology providers, including Google Cloud, AWS, and ServiceNow. During the 2020s, NiCE increasingly presented itself as an AI-centered customer-experience company rather than only a contact-center software vendor. CXone expanded to combine routing, digital interactions, workforce management, analytics, automation, knowledge, and AI-assisted service. In 2023, the company announced conversational CX capabilities involving ChatGPT, and CXone reached a reported milestone of one million users. The company also pursued region-specific data handling, including an EU-focused deployment in which customer data would remain within the European Union. In 2024, NiCE announced the planned departure of Barak Eilam at the end of the year and selected Scott Russell, formerly associated with SAP, as his successor. Russell became CEO on January 1, 2025. NiCE continued its AI strategy with CXone Orchestrator, AI-agent development, and the planned acquisition of Cognigy, whose multilingual conversational and agentic AI technology was intended to be integrated into CXone while remaining available as a standalone product. The company also refreshed its branding and emphasized automation, orchestration between AI and human agents, and enterprise-scale deployment. NiCE currently operates across customer-experience management, cloud contact centers, workforce engagement, conversational AI, knowledge management, analytics, fraud prevention, and financial-crime compliance. Its customers and target markets include commercial enterprises and government organizations with complex, high-volume interactions. The company's long-term strategy is centered on cloud software, unified customer-experience data, AI-assisted employees, autonomous service workflows, and risk-management technology.
