Overview
NFN Open & Bloot is the Dutch umbrella organisation for naturism and nude recreation. Founded on 26 February 1961 as the Nederlandse Federatie van Naturistenverenigingen, it was known until 2020 as Naturisten Federatie Nederland, and now operates under the name NFN Open & Bloot. It describes itself as the advocate for all Dutch people who enjoy recreating nude — a group it estimates at around 2.5 million, of whom some 55,000 are directly affiliated with NFN or are members of an NFN-affiliated association. The organisation works for the social acceptance, quality and safety of nude recreation. NFN's activities span interest representation, public acceptance work, and information and advice. It engages media and public bodies to normalise non-sexual nudity, and it shares expertise on nude recreation. Members receive publications including the magazine UIT! and BlootGewoon!, as well as a membership card of the International Naturist Federation, which is required for visiting some naturist facilities in the Netherlands and abroad. Since 2017 the organisation has also published the magazine Bloot. NFN has a quality label called Prettig Bloot, which indicates a verified minimum standard for naturist areas in terms of safety, freedom, respect, openness and hospitality, supported by a code of conduct intended to prevent unwanted behaviour. The organisation also has a youth branch: founded in 1963 as JNFN, renamed NFNJ in 2018, with efforts to revert to JNFN, and in March 2022 a new Jonge Naturisten Vereniging Nederland (JNVN) was founded for ages 15 to 28. Historically, NFN has been central to the legalisation and acceptance of nude recreation in the Netherlands. In 1973 the first public, officially recognised nude beach was designated at Callantsoog, following a court ruling. From the late 1970s NFN lobbied politically for the legalisation of nude beaches, and since the 1986 legislation (Article 430a of the Criminal Code) nude recreation has been permitted at locations designated or suitably appropriate. The Netherlands was the first country in the world to enact laws for legal nude recreation. NFN membership grew from 6,500 in 1975 to 72,000 in 2005. More than 80 local naturist associations are affiliated, the oldest being Zon en Leven (founded 1946) and the largest the Belgian-Dutch Athena (founded 1955). In 2022 the BlootGewoon! podcast, hosted by Christine Kouman and Koert-Jan de Bruijn, won a Dutch Podcast Award. NFN continues to run campaigns such as 'Voel je vrij, geef je bloot' and events including the BlootGewoon! ZwemFest AquaFun.
History
NFN Open & Bloot was founded on 26 February 1961 as the Nederlandse Federatie van Naturistenverenigingen. It later became known as Naturisten Federatie Nederland, and in 2020 adopted the name NFN Open & Bloot. From its founding it has served as the interest representation for nude recreation seekers and naturists in the Netherlands. More than 80 local naturist associations are affiliated, often with their own grounds. The oldest is Zon en Leven, founded in 1946, and the largest is the Belgian-Dutch Athena, founded in 1955. Between 1975 and 2005, NFN membership grew from 6,500 to 72,000. In 1973, the first public, officially recognised nude beach was designated at Callantsoog, following a court ruling. From the late 1970s, NFN also lobbied politically for the legalisation of nude beaches. Until then only a few municipalities, such as Callantsoog, The Hague and Zandvoort, had designated a nude beach. Only since the 1986 legislation is nude recreation permitted in the Netherlands at any location designated or suitably appropriate by the municipality (Article 430a of the Criminal Code). The Netherlands was the first country in the world to enact laws for legal nude recreation. NFN helped ensure that non-sexual nudity in public at suitable locations is not punishable and that municipal authorities cannot simply block such recreation. Members receive the magazine UIT! and BlootGewoon! and a membership card of the International Naturist Federation, required for visiting some naturist facilities in the Netherlands and abroad. Since 2017 the magazine Bloot has been published. Prettig Bloot is an NFN quality label indicating a verified minimum standard for naturist areas in terms of safety, freedom, respect, openness and hospitality; a code of conduct in these areas is intended to prevent unwanted behaviour. The youth branch was founded in 1963 as JNFN, making it the second-oldest youth organisation for naturists and nudists (only the German fkk-jugend, founded in 1953, is older). The name was changed from JNFN to NFNJ in 2018, but efforts are underway to rename the group back to JNFN. At the HLB weekend of 11–13 March 2022 in Waverveen, the Jonge Naturisten Vereniging Nederland (JNVN) was founded, targeting ages 15 to 28; parental consent is required until age 18. The youth organisation also has its own members' magazine, called JNFN-Nieuws until 2018. In 2022, the BlootGewoon! podcast, hosted by Christine Kouman and Koert-Jan de Bruijn, won a Dutch Podcast Award. The podcast, with 11 episodes at the time, discusses nude recreation as well as themes such as the sexualisation of the body, nudity in parenting, and the role of the media. NFN continues to run campaigns such as 'Voel je vrij, geef je bloot' and events including the BlootGewoon! ZwemFest AquaFun.
