Overview

Newpan (Hebrew: ניופאן) is one of Israel's leading importers and marketers of home appliances and consumer electronics. The company was founded in 1986 by the Gior family, evolving from a small carpentry business that imported speakers, built wooden enclosures, and exported them under various names to Germany and the United States. The name "Newpan" is a combination of "New" and "Japan," reflecting its origins in importing Japanese audio products. Newpan specializes in the import, marketing, sales, and service of leading international brands across all key electrical categories: home and professional air conditioning solutions, small and major domestic appliances, audio systems, TV screens, photography equipment, and computers. The company provides comprehensive, professional, high-quality solutions with a customer-oriented approach. In addition to its retail operations, Newpan offers B2B solutions to large companies and major organizations, including banks, universities, hotels, union groups, and real estate companies. Over the years, Newpan has expanded through subsidiaries such as New Audio Pro, which holds advanced audio-video solutions, and Newpan Telecom. The company operates three independent retail chains: Newpan Outlet, Newpan Gourmet, and Bose Center. Newpan is the official importer of brands such as KitchenAid, Toshiba, Haier, Canon, Bose, Magimix, Tefal, and Samsung (since 2025). Ownership is divided among the Gior family (50%), Allied Investments (30%), and Poalim Equity (20%).

History

The story of Newpan, one of the leading home appliance and electronic importers in Israel, starts in 1986 in a small carpentry owned by the Gior Family. This carpentry grew and developed to be Newpan. The success of the company led to be chosen to have the rights to distribute in Israel Kenwood products, the Japanese leading Audio brand. The name Newpan is a combination of New and Japan. In 1996, Newpan acquired the license to import television sets manufactured by the Japanese corporation Toshiba. That same year, it established the "Electro Depot" chain, which sold home electrical and electronic products within the ACE hardware chain in a store-within-a-store format. By 2000, Electro Depot had opened 14 branches within ACE, and that year it opened its first independent store and the "Hollywood Cinema Store" chain for marketing home cinema systems. A year later, the agreement with ACE was canceled, and it began working with Office Depot instead. In March 2001, Newpan acquired the company Fira, which imported leading brands in the electrical and electronics field to Israel, including Grundig, Pilot, Magimix, and Rowenta. In 2002, it received the license to market products of the French SEB Group in Israel, the world's largest manufacturer of cookware, owner of the TEFAL brand. In January 2003, Newpan acquired 75% of the shares of Elmor Audio, importer of Bose, Harman/Kardon, and JBL. In 2006, Newpan began marketing Haier products in Israel, the Chinese electronics corporation that acquired General Electric's electronics division that year. In September 2005, an agreement was signed between Newpan and the Skal Group to establish a jointly owned company to import LG and JVC electronics brands to Israel. Newpan and Skal failed to reach an agreement on the value of the deal, and it collapsed in May 2006 without being implemented—Skal decided to continue marketing both brands itself. In July 2007, Newpan entered a partnership in Skal's electrical store in the duty-free area at Ben Gurion Airport. However, Skal closed the store in September 2008, following the cancellation of its franchise agreement with the Airports Authority. In 2007, it established a subsidiary, "Newpan Telecom," which engaged in marketing and distribution of advanced cellular devices. Newpan Telecom signed a franchise agreement with HTC, a Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer. Omri Cohen was a partner in the company, but the partnership was dissolved due to a business dispute, and the company closed after about three years. In February 2008, Newpan acquired 50% of "Kart Israel," importer of Canon products. In November 2009, Newpan acquired 26% of the operations of the Best Buy and Big Box chains from the Fishman Group; in November 2010, Best Buy acquired the shopping site P1000. In May 2011, it also acquired the electrical products importer and marketer Mini Line, owner of the A.L.M. chain, but the Antitrust Authority required Newpan to sell its stake in the Best Buy chain as a condition for approving the deal. At the end of 2012, Best Buy encountered difficulties and subsequently closed, and the P1000 site passed to the ownership of the Mini Line group. In June 2010, Newpan acquired about 33% of the shares of "Hashmal Sitonai" (Electrical Wholesale), jointly owned by businessmen Avi Sofer and Eyal Ben Eliezer. In 2019, Newpan appointed Yaron Tzfadia as co-CEO. In March 2022, Newpan acquired about 80% of the shares of the "Last Price" website, jointly owned with Lior Hamo, the site's CEO. In October 2024, a significant change in Samsung's distribution model in Israel was announced. As part of this change, Mini Line (through Samline) lost the license to import and distribute Samsung home appliances after holding it for 26 years. In early 2025, the official license passed to Newpan, which established a subsidiary called "Newpro" for this purpose. Concurrently, the Electra Consumer Products group (owner of the Machsanei Hashmal chain) began importing Samsung products directly from the global manufacturer for its own chains. Ownership: In July 1992, Discount Investment Corporation acquired 50% of the company, and in 2001 the Gior family bought back its share. In February 2004, "Allied Investments" acquired 30% of the ownership of Newpan. In August 2021, "Poalim Equity" (formerly "Poalim Capital Markets") from Bank Hapoalim group acquired 20% of Newpan for 85 million shekels. After this acquisition, ownership is divided between the Gior family 50%, Allied Investments 30%, and Poalim Equity 20%. Independent stores: Under Newpan operate three independent retail chains—Newpan Outlet, Newpan Gourmet, and Bose Center. The Newpan Outlet chain has 8 branches spread throughout the country. Newpan Gourmet has 3 branches throughout the country. Bose Center has seven branches.
