Overview

NEW REOMA WORLD (ニューレオマワールド) is a theme park located in Ayauta-cho, Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture, on the island of Shikoku, Japan. It is part of the larger Reoma Resort complex and is operated by Reoma Unity Co., Ltd. (株式会社レオマユニティー), a company within the Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Group. The park first opened in 1991 as Reoma World and was rebranded and reopened as NEW REOMA WORLD on April 11, 2004, after a consortium of regional businesses acquired the assets of the previously closed park. It reopened again under new management on July 17, 2010. The resort is organized into five main areas: the amusement park zone with around 20 attractions and entertainment shows; an Asian heritage zone that recreates world heritage sites; a flower garden with seasonal blooms; a large illumination and light-up area; and a hot-spring resort hotel surrounded by forest. The park is known for its seasonal events, including Halloween parades, Christmas celebrations, flower festivals, and winter illuminations. It also features mascot characters such as Peddy Bird and Polly Bird, which originated in the earlier Reoma World era. NEW REOMA WORLD is positioned as a family-oriented destination that can be enjoyed across generations, from children to adults. It is one of the largest theme parks in Shikoku and is a member of the West Japan Amusement Park Association. The park offers a mix of rides, shows, dining, shopping, and lodging, with the adjacent Hotel Reoma no Mori providing accommodation and natural hot spring baths. In recent years, the park has continued to invest in new attractions and events, including the opening of the indoor role-play facility "Gokko Town" in 2024 and ongoing seasonal programming. The park's history includes several ownership changes. After the original Reoma World closed indefinitely in 2000, the site was revived in 2004 by a joint venture involving companies such as Katokichi (now TableMark Holdings), Marunaka, and Omocha Okoku. Following financial difficulties and a corporate scandal involving Katokichi, the operating company's shares were sold to Ooedo Onsen Monogatari in 2010. In 2016, the facility was sold to Ooedo Onsen REIT, a J-REIT, and in 2023 the operating company was merged into Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Hotels & Resorts Co., Ltd. Today, NEW REOMA WORLD remains an active leisure destination in Shikoku, welcoming visitors with a combination of rides, shows, gardens, and seasonal events.

History

The history of NEW REOMA WORLD begins with the original Reoma World, a theme park that opened in 1991 in Ayauta-cho, Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture. Reoma World operated until September 1, 2000, when it closed indefinitely. In 2004, a consortium of businesses based in Kagawa and Okayama prefectures, including Katokichi (now TableMark Holdings), Marunaka, and Omocha Okoku, purchased all the land, buildings, and assets of the closed park. They reopened it on April 11, 2004, as NEW REOMA WORLD. The name "Reoma World" was retained because it was well known within the prefecture, but "New Reoma" was adopted as the common name to distinguish it from the previous operation. The symbol mark and logo from the old Reoma World were carried over. Under the 2004–2010 management structure, the park was divided into four areas, each managed by a different company on an independent accounting basis. These were: Shikoku Otakara-mura (dining and shopping area, managed by Marunaka), Reoma Omocha Okoku (amusement park area, managed by Reoma Unity), Hotel Reoma no Mori (hotel and hot spring, managed by Katokichi and later Ooedo Onsen Monogatari), and Reoma Animal Park (zoo area, managed by Nisshin Dobutsu). The first year saw over 1.6 million visitors, but attendance dropped to about 950,000 in 2005 and continued to decline. A major turning point came when Katokichi, a core company in the consortium, became involved in a circular transaction scandal and subsequently became a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Tobacco (JT). JT decided to review its leisure business, which was not closely related to its food operations. In May 2010, the shares of Kagawa Prefecture Tourism Development (the operating company) held by TableMark were sold to Ooedo Onsen Monogatari. The zoo area was closed on June 25, 2010, and the park reopened under the new management on July 17, 2010, with a ceremony at the main entrance. The reopening featured the return of mascot characters Peddy Bird and Polly Bird after 10 years, and the launch of the "NEW Reoma World Fantastic Parade." From 2010 onward, the park introduced various seasonal events, including Halloween festivals, Christmas celebrations, and New Year countdowns. In 2015, the park began "Reoma Light World" and "Reoma Flower World," and in October 2015, "Reoma Light World" received a special award at the 3rd Illumination Awards. In 2016, the park celebrated its 25th anniversary with a commemorative parade and announced new facilities, including a theme hotel and new attractions. On September 1, 2016, the facility was sold to Ooedo Onsen REIT Investment Corporation, which listed as a J-REIT. In 2023, the operating company was merged into Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Hotels & Resorts Co., Ltd., and the limited liability company Kagawa Prefecture Tourism Development was dissolved. In 2024, the REIT changed its name to Japan Hotel & Residential Investment Corporation following a sponsor change to APA Group. As of 2025, NEW REOMA WORLD continues to operate as a theme park and resort, with attractions such as the large Ferris wheel, Bird Flyer, Rainbow Bandit, and various family rides. The park also maintains the Oriental Trip area, which recreates Asian heritage sites, and the Reoma Flower World gardens. The mascot characters Peddy Bird and Polly Bird remain central to the park's identity, appearing in parades and shows. The park is a member of the West Japan Amusement Park Association and remains one of the largest theme parks in Shikoku.
