Overview
The Neues Lausitzisches Magazin (NLM) is a German academic journal published by the Oberlausitzische Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften (Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences). It first appeared in 1821, continuing a tradition of regional scholarly periodicals that began in the late 18th century. The journal is dedicated to the history, natural history, and culture of Upper and Lower Lusatia, a historical region spanning parts of modern-day Saxony, Brandenburg, and Poland. Over its long run, it has published 119 volumes, with contributions from numerous editors and scholars. Publication was interrupted during the Napoleonic Wars and again after World War II, when much of the print run was destroyed. The journal was revived in 1998 and continues to be published, with volume numbering adjusted in 2012 to reflect the entire publication history. The NLM remains a vital resource for historians and researchers interested in the Lusatian region.
History
The Neues Lausitzisches Magazin (NLM) is the publication organ of the Oberlausitzische Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften (Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences). Its origins trace back to earlier periodicals: the Provinzialblätter oder Sammlungen zur Geschichte, Naturkunde, Moral und anderen Wissenschaften, published by the Society between 1781 and 1783, and the Lausitzische Magazin, published independently from 1768 to 1792. In 1793, Christian August Pescheck transferred his Lausizische Monatsschrift oder Beyträge zur natürlichen, ökonomischen und politischen Geschichte der Ober- und Niederlausiz und der damit grenzenden Landschaften to the Society, which continued it as the Lausizische Monatschrift until 1799. This was followed by the Neue Lausizische Monatsschrift from 1800 to 1808. The Napoleonic Wars then interrupted the Society's publishing activities. Short-lived attempts such as the Wochenblatt für die Lausitz und den Cottbusser Kreis (1811), Vergangenheit und Gegenwart (1812), and Vaterländische Monatsschrift zunächst für beide Lausitzen (1813) each appeared only briefly. Publication resumed in 1821 under the name Neues Lausitzisches Magazin, referencing one of its predecessors. By 1941, 117 volumes had been published. The journal included indexes in volumes 46 (1869, covering volumes 1–44, 1822–1868), 76 (1900, for volumes 1–75, 1822–1899), 86 (1910, for volumes 76–85, 1900–1909), 102 (1926, for volumes 86–101, 1910–1925), and 112 (1936, for volumes 102–111, 1926–1935). Volume 118 of 1942 was probably still printed but no longer distributed. Almost the entire print run was destroyed during World War II. The editorial archives contain the not entirely complete revision of volume 119, which was to appear in 1943. After their discovery, both volumes were reproduced in four copies each and given to the Library of the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences, the Görlitz City Archives, the Saxon State Library, and the Dresden State Archives. The Neues Lausitzische Magazin was again published from 1998 until 2011 (volume 14) with the subtitle Neue Folge. Since 2012 (volume 134), numbering covers the entire publication history. Editors have included Johann Gotthelf Neumann (volumes 1–8, 1822–1830), Christian Adolf Pescheck (volumes 9–12, 1831–1834), Joachim Leopold Haupt (volumes 13–22, 1835–1844), Ernst Tillich (volumes 23–24, 1846–1847), Johann Carl Otto Jancke (volumes 25–26, 1849), C. G. Th. Neumann (volumes 27–33, 1850–1856), Gustav Köhler (volumes 34–35, 1857–1858), Gottlob Traugott Leberecht Hirche (volumes 36–40, 1859–1863), Titus Wilde (volumes 41–42, 1864–1865), E. E. Struve (volumes 43–51, 1866–1874), Karl Friedrich Schönwälder (volumes 52–64, 1876–1888), and Richard Jecht (volumes 65–119, 1889–1943).
