Overview

The Neue Regensburger Hütte is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) of the Regensburg section of the Deutscher Alpenverein (DAV), located at 2,286 metres in the Stubai Alps above the Falbesoner Bach in Neustift im Stubaital, Tyrol, Austria. It is a Category I Alpine Club hut of medium size, offering 101 sleeping places — 65 in two- and four-bed rooms and 36 in mattress dormitories including a winter room. The hut is open during the summer months, typically from early June to mid-October, and serves as a base for hikers and climbers exploring the Stubai Höhenweg and surrounding peaks such as the Kreuzspitze, Ruderhofspitze and Östliche Knotenspitze. Built in 1930/1931 as a replacement for the original Regensburger Hütte in the Dolomites, which was lost after World War I, the hut opened on 16 August 1931. It has been modernised several times, notably in 1967 with a major expansion and the installation of a small hydroelectric power plant, and in 2018/2019 with a timber annex designed by Rainer Köberl. The hut was placed under heritage protection in 2013. Since the 2023 season, under tenant Christian Tomaselli and his family, it has operated as the first purely vegetarian mountain hut in Tyrol, emphasising regional products and sustainability. The Neue Regensburger Hütte is not a commercial company but a facility and brand of the DAV's Regensburg section. It is a well-known destination in the Stubai Alps, accessible from Falbeson in about 2.5 to 3 hours, and offers a seminar room, warm showers, and a cosy Zirbenstube in the old building alongside the modern wooden annex.

History

The Neue Regensburger Hütte was built by the Regensburg section of the Deutscher und Österreichischer Alpenverein in 1930/1931 as a replacement for the original Regensburger Hütte in the Geisler group of the Dolomites, which had been lost after World War I. It opened on 16 August 1931. After World War II, the hut passed to the Austrian Alpine Club in 1945. In 1956 it was returned to the Regensburg section, which had been re-founded as the Alpenclub Regensburg in 1947 and became the Regensburg section of the DAV again in 1952. Various modernisations followed, including the supply of running water, expansion of the toilets, and a first extension of the building. Since 1961 a material cable car from Falbeson has secured supplies to the hut. In 1967 the hut was expanded a second time, considerably; among other things, a hydroelectric power plant has since provided the necessary energy. In 2013 the hut, in which the original parlours from the construction period have been preserved, was placed under heritage protection. In 2018 and 2019 the hut received a wooden annex designed by Rainer Köberl. The slender timber structure is connected to the main house and houses a total of 48 sleeping places in two- and four-bed rooms. Overall the number of sleeping places remained at 101. The mountain station of the material cable car, which was upgraded and now allows limited passenger transport, replaced the old construction hut from the 1930s. In 2020 the small hydroelectric power plant was upgraded and the drinking water supply modernised. From the 2023 season, the tenant offers only vegetarian dishes, making it the first mountain hut in Tyrol to do so.
