Overview

Neue Mitte Jena is a shopping centre in the city centre of Jena, Thuringia, Germany, located at Eichplatz and forming the base structure of the Jentower, the tallest office building in Thuringia. It is one of the largest shopping centres in the state. The centre is owned by City- und Centermanagement Weimar GmbH, a subsidiary of the Saller Gruppe. The original base of the tower was inaugurated together with the high-rise in 1972. In 1977 the Thomas-Mann-Buchhandlung opened there, then the largest bookshop in the city. After German reunification, the tower base was demolished in 1999 and rebuilt, creating the shopping centre that opened on 15 October 2003. A distinctive feature is the large glass façade on the Leutragraben side. A car park with 180 spaces opened together with the centre. Since then the centre has been remodelled in three construction phases. Most recently, a new supermarket was installed on the upper floor, replacing the former food court. Anchor tenants include the Thalia Universitätsbuchhandlung, an Aldi and a Rewe supermarket. In total, seventeen shops, including restaurants, extend over a sales area of 12,000 square metres. Part of the total area is used for offices and a fitness studio. The centre offers services such as a baby changing room, barrier-free access, disabled parking, disabled toilets, parent-child parking, bicycle stands, customer lifts, customer toilets, a DHL parcel acceptance point, and a car park with over 180 spaces open 24 hours a day. Core opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 20:00. The address is Leutragraben 1, 07743 Jena. The centre also has an observation platform; enquiries about it are directed to Mr. Machner.

History

The original base structure of the Jentower was inaugurated together with the high-rise in 1972. In 1977 the Thomas-Mann-Buchhandlung opened in the base, becoming the largest bookshop in Jena. After the political changes of 1989–1990, the tower base was demolished in 1999 and rebuilt. This reconstruction created the shopping centre, which opened on 15 October 2003. A distinctive feature is the large glass façade on the Leutragraben side. A car park with 180 spaces opened together with the centre. Since then the centre has been remodelled in three construction phases. Most recently, a new supermarket was installed on the upper floor, replacing the former food court. The centre is currently owned by City- und Centermanagement Weimar GmbH, a subsidiary of the Saller Gruppe. Anchor tenants include the Thalia Universitätsbuchhandlung, an Aldi and a Rewe supermarket. In total, seventeen shops, including restaurants, extend over a sales area of 12,000 square metres. Part of the total area is used for offices and a fitness studio. In the early years of the centre, a wire rope with a puppet that alternately climbed up and down was located under the projecting roof of the glass façade on the Leutragraben side.
