History
Neue Lübecker Norddeutsche Baugenossenschaft eG was founded on 14 November 1949 in Lübeck. Among its founders was Alfred Gille, who served as long-time chairman of the supervisory board until 1971. The first tenants moved in on 1 April 1951, when 155 families received apartments in the Philosophenviertel in Lübeck; a further 56 families followed on 1 July 1951. In the 1960s the cooperative merged with other housing cooperatives from the surrounding area in Schleswig-Holstein and reduced new construction due to rising building costs. The oil crisis of 1973 triggered the first major modernisation wave: facades received comprehensive thermal insulation, plastic windows and new heating systems. In 1978 the cooperative exceeded 10,000 apartments for the first time. In the 1980s it responded to the shortage of small, affordable apartments by converting large, hard-to-let units into several smaller ones. In November 1986 it merged with Gemeinnützige Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft Elbmarsch eG, significantly expanding its Elmshorn location. In the decade of the border opening, there was a rush for West German apartments. In 1991 the cooperative expanded into Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and merged with local housing companies such as 'AWG-Aufbau', other 'Arbeiterwohnungsbaugenossenschaften' and 'Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft Schwerin-West eG'. From 1993, some of the newly acquired buildings had to be sold again under the Altschuldenhilfegesetz (old debt assistance law); they were preferentially bought by tenants. For its 50th anniversary, the cooperative moved to new premises. In the new millennium it strengthened its presence in Hamburg, Hamburg's outskirts and other locations through acquisitions or new construction. At the beginning of 2012 it was represented at over 36 locations and expanded its business area to Hamburg, where a new construction project was underway on Luruper Hauptstraße on the former site of Hermes Schleifmittel GmbH. As of 2024 the cooperative had 18,988 members and 165 employees. Its largest holdings were in Lübeck (3,298 apartments), Elmshorn (1,897), Ahrensburg (1,598) and Schwerin (1,051).
