Overview
The Neue Fürther Hütte is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) owned and operated by the Sektion Fürth of the Deutscher Alpenverein (German Alpine Club). It sits at 2,201 metres above sea level in the uppermost Hollersbachtal valley in the state of Salzburg, Austria, beneath the dramatic backdrop of the Larmkogel (3,022 m) and near the Kratzenbergsee lake (2,167 m). The hut has served hikers, mountaineers and families for over 90 years and is a popular destination for nature lovers. It is also a key staging point on long-distance trails such as the Tauern Westweg and the Arnoweg, and can be reached by foot, mountain bike, e-bike or hut taxi. The building was constructed between 1928 and 1929 as a replacement for the original Fürther Hütte (which later became the Rieserfernerhütte) and opened on 15 July 1929. The hut is run by a tenant (Pächter); a new tenant took over in 2024. The 2026 season opening is planned for 29 May 2026. As a commercial offering, the hut provides accommodation, food and beverage services to visitors in a high-alpine setting.
History
The history of the Neue Fürther Hütte is closely tied to its predecessor, the Alte Fürther Hütte. The original hut was built between 1902 and 1903 at the Gänsebichljoch in the Rieserfernergruppe at 2,792 metres. It had a footprint of 12 by 8.5 metres, two floors and about 18 sleeping places. It was run by Paula and Heinrich Röck from Sand in Taufers and was praised in the hut book for its good kitchen, friendly welcome and excellent furnishings. Its most prominent guest was Friedrich August, King of Saxony, who signed the hut book on 27 July 1914 with his adjutant. The hut was open during the summer months from 1903 to 1914. After World War I and the Treaty of Saint-Germain on 10 September 1919, the southern part of Tyrol was awarded to Italy, placing the hut on Italian territory. It was declared state property and expropriated from the Sektion Fürth. By the early 1970s the hut had fallen into ruin. In 1980, the Alpenverein Südtirol (Sections Bozen and Bruneck) inaugurated the Rieserfernerhütte right next to the ruin. A memorial plaque at the Rieserfernerhütte commemorates the Alte Fürther Hütte. To replace the lost hut, the Sektion Fürth built the Neue Fürther Hütte between 1928 and 1929 in the Hollersbachtal. It opened on 15 July 1929. The hut has been in continuous operation since then, serving as a base for hikers and mountaineers. In 2024 a new tenant took over the operation. The 2026 season is scheduled to open on 29 May 2026.
