Overview
Netflix Studios is the production division of Netflix, Inc., the American streaming entertainment company. Where Netflix as a platform licenses and distributes content, Netflix Studios is the internal studio structure through which the company develops and produces much of its own original film and television output — the "Netflix Originals" that anchor the service's catalogue in markets around the world. The studio's rise is tied to Netflix's strategic pivot from a DVD-by-mail rental service and a licenser of third-party programming into a vertically integrated entertainment company. As licensing costs rose and major studios began holding back content for their own streaming services, Netflix increasingly financed and produced originals in-house, building a studio operation that commissions projects from external producers while also developing and producing titles directly. Netflix Studios is associated with the company's Los Angeles production footprint, including its Hollywood facilities, and works alongside Netflix's other content units covering series, film, animation, documentary and unscripted programming. Because Netflix Studios is not a separately incorporated public company, it does not report its own financials; its output is folded into Netflix, Inc.'s global content spend and subscriber-facing catalogue. The studio's brand identity is therefore closely bound to the parent Netflix brand: it is a production credential rather than a consumer-facing label, appearing in credits and industry contexts rather than as a standalone service. Its competitive position sits within the broader "streaming wars" landscape, where Netflix competes with other vertically integrated platforms that own their own studios. Netflix Studios' role is to secure exclusive, owned content that differentiates the service and supports subscriber retention and global expansion.
History
Netflix Studios exists as part of Netflix, Inc.'s evolution from a subscription DVD rental business, founded in the late 1990s, into a global streaming service launched in the late 2000s. As the company moved into streaming, it initially relied heavily on licensed films and television series from third-party studios and networks. The turning point came as Netflix began commissioning and acquiring original programming, which it branded as Netflix Originals. The success of early originals encouraged the company to expand from licensing finished programmes into financing, developing and producing content itself. This shift required building internal studio capabilities — development, production oversight, and physical production infrastructure — that came to be organized under the Netflix Studios banner. As competing media companies consolidated and launched their own streaming services, they increasingly withheld their libraries from Netflix, reinforcing the strategic logic of in-house production. Netflix Studios therefore became central to the parent company's content strategy, producing and commissioning a large volume of films and series across genres and languages for a global audience. Netflix's investment in Los Angeles production facilities, including studio space associated with its Hollywood presence, reflected the studio's role as a major buyer and producer in the entertainment industry. The studio operates not as a separate public entity but as an integrated division, with its output reported within Netflix, Inc.'s overall content spending and subscriber metrics.
