Overview

Netflix is an American entertainment company and subscription video-on-demand service headquartered in Los Gatos, California. Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph founded the business in Scotts Valley, California, in 1997. It initially rented DVDs by mail and differentiated itself through a subscription model that removed traditional rental due dates and, later, used recommendation technology and queue-based ordering to make home video more convenient. The company launched its DVD service in 1998 and introduced a monthly subscription in 1999. During the early 2000s, its physical-disc operation expanded rapidly, supported by centralized distribution centers and a large catalog. Netflix also experimented with film licensing, independent-film distribution, and original-content activity through Red Envelope Entertainment. DVDs remained commercially important for years, but management increasingly treated the disc business as a bridge toward internet delivery. Netflix launched internet streaming in January 2007. The initial catalog was much smaller than its DVD library, and the service was first designed for computers, but its availability expanded through televisions, game consoles, Blu-ray players, set-top boxes, mobile devices, and other connected hardware. The company encouraged manufacturers to build Netflix compatibility into their products rather than relying on a proprietary Netflix device; this approach helped streaming become a standard feature of consumer electronics. The transition created strategic and operational tensions. Netflix separated streaming and DVD pricing in 2011 and proposed moving DVD rentals to a separate Qwikster brand. Customers strongly rejected the price increase and proposed brand separation, and Netflix abandoned Qwikster soon afterward. The episode became a defining lesson in the risks of changing a familiar customer proposition too quickly. Netflix began commissioning substantial original programming in the early 2010s. Lilyhammer was an early original distribution project, while House of Cards, released in 2013, established Netflix as a first-run television producer and popularized the simultaneous release of a complete season. Orange Is the New Black, later international productions, documentaries, films, and children’s programming broadened the service beyond licensed catalog content. Netflix’s use of viewing data, global distribution, and flexible release schedules became central to its competitive identity. The company expanded internationally in stages, entering Canada in 2010, Latin America in 2011, the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2012, additional European markets thereafter, and more than 130 new territories in 2016. Its catalog and pricing vary by market, and local-language productions became increasingly important. Series such as La casa de papel, Dark, The Crown, Stranger Things, Squid Game, and Wednesday helped establish Netflix as a global commissioning and distribution network rather than simply a US video service. Netflix’s business now centers on paid streaming memberships, content licensing and production, and related initiatives. It offers plans with different features and pricing, including an advertising-supported tier in selected markets. The company has also expanded into mobile games and has tested broader forms of live programming, including sports and entertainment events. Its principal competitive challenges include escalating content costs, competition from other streaming platforms, password sharing, regional regulation, advertising execution, and the need to sustain subscriber engagement while managing a large international operation. Netflix is publicly traded on the Nasdaq under the ticker NFLX. It remains an active global brand whose identity is strongly associated with on-demand viewing, original programming, personalized recommendations, and the shift from scheduled television and physical rentals to internet distribution.

History

Netflix was founded on August 29, 1997, by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings in Scotts Valley, California. The company launched its DVD rental service in April 1998, initially using a per-rental model. In 1999 it introduced a monthly subscription, and the per-rental model was subsequently discontinued. The subscription structure, online title selection, queue management, and elimination of conventional late fees helped Netflix distinguish itself from physical video-rental stores. By the middle of the 2000s, Netflix had developed a large DVD catalog and an extensive distribution network. It shipped millions of discs and experimented with independent-film licensing and distribution through Red Envelope Entertainment. At the same time, improvements in broadband access and reductions in data-delivery costs made internet video increasingly practical. Netflix therefore developed streaming technology and explored a dedicated hardware device before choosing to place Netflix functionality in televisions and third-party consumer electronics. In January 2007, Netflix introduced internet streaming. The initial service had a relatively small catalog and was primarily intended for computer viewing, but it soon expanded to televisions, game consoles, Blu-ray players, set-top boxes, mobile devices, and other connected products. In 2008, streaming became available to qualifying rental subscribers without a separate charge. By 2009, streaming activity had overtaken DVD shipments, demonstrating the strategic direction of the business. International expansion began in Canada in 2010 and continued through Latin America in 2011, the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2012, and further European markets. In January 2016, Netflix launched in more than 130 additional countries and territories, bringing the service to most of the world. International operations required localized interfaces, subtitles, dubbing, regional licensing, local production relationships, and market-specific pricing. Netflix’s rapid transition created a major setback in 2011. Management proposed separating DVD rentals into a new service called Qwikster while also changing prices for customers who wanted both DVD and streaming access. Customers viewed the proposal as confusing and expensive. The company apologized, abandoned Qwikster, and kept the DVD service under the Netflix identity. The controversy damaged customer confidence and became one of the company’s most important strategic reversals. The company’s original-programming strategy developed during the same period. Lilyhammer was an early original distribution project, while House of Cards became the landmark first-run series commissioned specifically for Netflix. Released in 2013 with its first season available at once, it demonstrated that a streaming service could finance, distribute, and market prestige television outside the traditional weekly broadcast schedule. Orange Is the New Black, documentaries, children’s programming, original films, and later non-English productions expanded the model. Netflix relied heavily on viewing data to guide recommendations, commissioning, promotion, and user-interface design. Its acquisition of rights to Breaking Bad also illustrated the so-called Netflix effect: making earlier episodes readily available could enlarge the audience for a program on its original broadcaster. The company’s catalog strategy combined licensed content with increasingly expensive original productions, reducing dependence on studios while creating substantial production and amortization commitments. During the late 2010s and early 2020s, Netflix competed with services operated by major technology, media, and telecommunications companies. The company joined the Motion Picture Association in 2019, reflecting its growing status as a major film and television distributor. The COVID-19 pandemic increased demand for home entertainment, but subsequent periods brought slower membership growth, stronger competition, content-cost pressure, and investor concern. In 2022, Netflix reported a quarterly membership decline and responded with measures including an advertising-supported plan and a broader effort to address password sharing. Netflix introduced its advertising-supported tier in selected markets in November 2022 and expanded the service’s commercial model. It also entered mobile gaming, initially offering games to members without a separate in-app charge. In 2023, the company more actively enforced household-account rules and changed its leadership structure: Reed Hastings became executive chairman while Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters served as co-CEOs. Netflix continues to operate as a global subscription entertainment platform, combining original and acquired programming with localized distribution, advertising, games, and selected live content.
