Overview

Net TV is an Argentine commercial television network established by Grupo Perfil as part of the publishing group's expansion into audiovisual media. The channel is headquartered in the Barracas neighborhood of Buenos Aires and is operated in partnership with Kuarzo Entertainment Argentina, a local television production company. It formally began broadcasting on October 1, 2018, opening with the cooking-themed talk show Como Todo. Its launch made it Argentina's sixth national must-carry broadcast network and the first new network of that category in approximately 54 years, following the creation of América TV in 1964. The network originated in an initiative led by Jorge Fontevecchia, founder of Grupo Perfil. In 2015, Perfil inaugurated a new Barracas headquarters containing radio and television studios and submitted a proposal to Argentina's Federal Authority for Audiovisual Communication Services for a group of radio and television licenses. The initial application, filed in September 2015, was rejected because regulators identified deficiencies in the submitted documentation. Perfil and Kuarzo subsequently reapplied. In 2016, the National Communications Entity granted licenses covering AM radio, FM radio, and digital television services in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. The resulting television plans included Net TV on digital channel 27.2, alongside the planned Alfa TV and Bravo TV services on other digital channels. Net TV's licensing status gives it must-carry distribution, requiring cable television systems to include the network in their channel lineups. At launch, the channel scheduled original programming on weekdays from midday through late night. Its early programming strategy combined studio talk shows, lifestyle formats, entertainment, reality television, scripted fiction, imported series, and movie blocks. Initial or early programs included Como Todo, Las Rubias + 1, Chismoses, Tenemos Wifi, Pampita Íntima, Cuestión de Peso, Todo por Amor, and the live overnight feed connected with the reality format Por Amor o por Dinero. The channel also used programming associated with Kuarzo and recruited established Argentine hosts and formats that had previously appeared on other outlets. Net TV expanded into scripted prime-time programming in November 2018 with the premiere of Millennials. It also introduced weekend original programming through Cualquiera Puede Bailar. During 2019, the schedule broadened with talk and opinion programs such as Gente Opinando and Corea del Centro, the interview and current-affairs program Periodismo Puro, the game show Pareja o Despareja, the return of Pampita Online, and a second season of Millennials. The network also acquired or aired several Colombian telenovelas and moved the sketch-comedy program Peligro: Sin Codificar from Telefe. In 2020, Net TV added fiction titles including La Promesa and La Viuda Negra. The network has also articulated a potential shift toward a schedule with greater emphasis on news and talk programming. In more recent schedule descriptions, its weekend output has included movie blocks and sports-related programming. Net TV's overall positioning is that of a broadly distributed Argentine free-to-air network combining locally produced entertainment and discussion formats with acquired fiction, reality, film, and sports content.

History

Net TV emerged from Grupo Perfil's effort to diversify from publishing into radio and television. The project was associated with Jorge Fontevecchia, who developed the concept as part of a broader audiovisual expansion. In October 2015, Grupo Perfil opened a new headquarters in Barracas, Buenos Aires, equipped with radio and television studios. The company then presented a proposal to Argentina's Federal Authority for Audiovisual Communication Services covering AM and FM radio services as well as must-carry digital television networks. That first application was rejected on September 25, 2015, because of deficiencies in the documentation. Perfil later pursued the licenses with Kuarzo Entertainment Argentina, a local production partner. In 2016, the National Communications Entity approved licenses for AM 1190 kHz, FM 101.9 MHz, and two digital television channels serving the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. The associated television allocation placed Net TV on digital channel 27.2. The same licensing process also contemplated Alfa TV on channel 21.1 and Bravo TV on channel 27.1, although those services were described as remaining in broadcast testing. Net TV's must-carry status meant that cable operators were required to include the channel in their lineups, giving the new network a distribution footprint beyond over-the-air reception. Net TV formally debuted on October 1, 2018. Its first broadcast was Como Todo, a cooking-oriented talk show, and the initial schedule ran original weekday programming from noon until approximately midnight. The launch lineup reflected the network's partnership-oriented production model and its intention to compete through a mixture of studio formats, entertainment personalities, lifestyle content and reality television. Programs included Las Rubias + 1, Chismoses, Tenemos Wifi, Pampita Íntima, Cuestión de Peso and Todo por Amor. During overnight hours, the network also carried a live feed from the house used for the reality program Por Amor o por Dinero. The channel broadened its programming identity soon after launch. On November 26, 2018, it premiered Millennials, its first prime-time scripted production. Later that year, Cualquiera Puede Bailar became the first program to air original episodes on weekends. These moves complemented the weekday talk and reality schedule with fiction and weekend entertainment. Net TV's 2019 schedule included Gente Opinando, Pareja o Despareja, Corea del Centro and Periodismo Puro, as well as the return of Pampita Online after its move from KZO Entertainment. Millennials received a second season, while the network added Colombian fiction titles including The Queen of Flow, The Girl, Pablo Escobar, The Drug Lord and The Mafia Dolls. The transfer of Peligro: Sin Codificar from Telefe, which premiered on Net TV on August 26, further increased the channel's entertainment profile. During 2020, the network added the telenovelas La Promesa and La Viuda Negra. It also indicated an intention to move toward a schedule more heavily weighted toward news and talk programming. Later schedule descriptions characterize Net TV as continuing to combine programs and movie blocks on weekends, including Platea de Tickets and Spanish-language sports content associated with Worldplay Sportsnet Uno en Español. Net TV therefore developed from a new must-carry general-entertainment network into a mixed-format Argentine television service with local originals, transferred programs, acquired international fiction, films and sports content.
