Overview
NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC) is an equal joint venture formed by ACWA Power, Air Products and NEOM, based at Oxagon in NEOM, Saudi Arabia. It is building the world's largest green hydrogen plant, powered solely by renewable electricity, designed to produce up to 600 tonnes per day of green hydrogen for decarbonising sectors including transport and heavy industry, potentially saving up to 5 million tonnes of CO2 every year. The green hydrogen will be captured as green ammonia and exported globally. NGHC states it is investing $8.4bn with support from its partners and 23 local, regional and international banks, and describes itself as a key part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.
History
NEOM Green Hydrogen Company was created when three market innovators, ACWA Power, Air Products and NEOM, came together with a shared mission to lead the world in its transition to a carbon-free future. The joint venture was incorporated in August 2021 by ACWA Power, Air Products and NEOM. In August 2021 NGHC awarded Germany's Thyssenkrupp Nucera the contract to supply the electrolysis plant for the project. In March 2022 NGHC signed a contract with Air Products EPC for the installation of the first 20MW electrolyser and associated utilities within ENOWA's Hydrogen Innovation Development Center. In December 2022 facility agreements were reached with local, regional and international banks; Haldor Topsoe was contracted to provide technology for green ammonia production; and Larsen & Toubro was appointed EPC contractor for power transmission and generation works. In January 2023 NGHC was awarded an operating license by the Saudi Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources (MIMR). In May 2023 financial close was reached at a total value of $8.4 billion investment, with significant participation from SIDF and the National Infrastructure Fund (NIF). In June 2023 full notice to proceed was issued to Air Products for construction of the green hydrogen facility. In November 2023 the first major delivery of wind turbines reached the NGHC site. In September 2024 NGHC and the Energy & Water Academy (EWA) partnered to train Saudi Arabia's future green energy workforce. As of the company's current statements, construction of the plant is in final completion and commissioning has started with energisation; the plant remains on track with 4 GW solar and wind power generation sites to be completed by mid-2026, followed by commissioning of the electrolysers, with expected product availability in 2027.
