Overview

Nellohütte is a managed hiking hut (Schutzhütte) in the Palatinate Forest (Pfälzerwald) of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is owned and operated by the Wanderclub Nello e.V., an independent hiking club based in Landau/Pfalz. The hut sits at an elevation of about 392–398 metres above sea level on the Gemarkung of the municipality Rhodt unter Rietburg, near the source of the Meisentalbach stream and close to the Kohlplatz pass. The original Nellohütte dates from 1923 and is still preserved below the current hiking home. The present facility consists of a masonry main building with additional outbuildings for supplies and toilets, a guest room with self-service counter, and outdoor terraces with wooden tables and benches, some covered, plus children's play equipment. The hut is open on weekends and on certain holidays, staffed entirely by volunteer club members. It can only be reached on foot, typically via a roughly 2 km uphill walk from a hiking car park in the Modenbachtal. As a volunteer-run excursion destination, Nellohütte functions as a small hospitality brand within the hiking and outdoor recreation sector, offering simple food and drink in a rustic setting rather than commercial accommodation. Its operations are tied to the club's mission and the broader network of Palatinate Forest huts, including nearby Amicitia-Hütte, Edenkobener Hütte, Schweizerhaus and Waldhaus Drei Buchen.

History

The history of Nellohütte is closely tied to the Wanderclub Nello e.V., a hiking club based in Landau/Pfalz. The original Nellohütte was built in 1923 and remains preserved below the current hiking home. The present managed hut was developed as a hiking home (Wanderheim) for the club, situated at about 392–398 metres above sea level within the Gemarkung of Rhodt unter Rietburg, near the source of the Meisentalbach and the Kohlplatz pass. Over time, the facility was expanded with a masonry main building, outbuildings for supplies and toilets, a guest room with self-service counter, and outdoor terraces with wooden tables and benches on multiple levels south and east of the main house. Covered seating and children's play equipment were added. The hut is staffed entirely by volunteer club members (ehrenamtlicher Hüttendienst) and is open on weekends and certain holidays. It remains a foot-access-only destination, reached via hiking trails from car parks in the Modenbachtal, Edenkobener Tal, or from Lolosruhe pass. The club continues to operate the hut as a non-commercial service for hikers and visitors in the Palatinate Forest.
