Overview

The Nederlands instituut voor Zuidelijk Afrika (NiZA, "Netherlands Institute for Southern Africa") was a Dutch non-governmental organization based in Amsterdam that operated from 1997 to 2012. It was formed through the merger of three organizations with long histories of anti-apartheid and Southern Africa solidarity work: the Instituut voor Zuidelijk Afrika (IZA, successor to the Anti-Apartheids Beweging Nederland, AABN), the Eduardo Mondlane Stichting, and the Komitee Zuidelijk Afrika (KZA, successor to the Angola Comité). Together these predecessors had campaigned against apartheid and neo-colonialism in Southern Africa, including South Africa, Angola and Mozambique. After the abolition of apartheid, NiZA gradually shifted its focus toward a more just distribution of revenues from natural resources in Sub-Saharan Africa. In 2007 it began cooperating with ActionAid International, and in April 2012 that cooperation was formalized with official membership, at which point the organization took the name ActionAid Nederland and moved to a new website, actionaid.nl. The old NiZA website was retained as an archive, hosting the full NiZA library and publication lists, which have not been updated since June 2008. NiZA's archive was placed in 2008 at the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam, and includes papers of well-known activists such as Sietse Bosgra (Angola Comité/KZA), Conny Braam (AABN) and Klaas de Jonge. A further collection is held at the Basler Afrika Bibliographien. As a brand and organizational identity, NiZA is now defunct, having been absorbed into ActionAid Nederland.

History

The Nederlands instituut voor Zuidelijk Afrika (NiZA) was established in 1997 as a merger of three Dutch organizations with deep roots in the anti-apartheid and Southern Africa solidarity movement. The first was the Instituut voor Zuidelijk Afrika (IZA), which had grown out of the Anti-Apartheids Beweging Nederland (AABN, 1971–1994). The second was the Eduardo Mondlane Stichting (1969–1997), named after the Mozambican liberation leader. The third was the Komitee Zuidelijk Afrika (KZA, 1977–1997), which had emerged from the Angola Comité (1961–1976). Each brought a long record of campaigning against apartheid and neo-colonialism in Southern Africa, including South Africa, Angola and Mozambique. Following the end of apartheid, NiZA gradually reoriented its mission. Rather than focusing primarily on the struggle against racial segregation, it turned toward the goal of a fairer distribution of revenues from natural resources in Sub-Saharan Africa. This shift reflected the changing political landscape of the region and the organization's desire to address structural economic injustices. In 2007 NiZA joined forces with ActionAid International. This partnership deepened over the following years and culminated in April 2012 when NiZA became an official member of ActionAid International. As part of this transition, the organization adopted the name ActionAid Nederland and launched a new website at actionaid.nl. The former NiZA website was preserved as an archive, containing the complete NiZA library and publication lists, which had not been updated since June 2008. NiZA's historical records were deposited in 2008 at the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam. These archives include the papers of prominent activists such as Sietse Bosgra (Angola Comité/KZA), Conny Braam (AABN) and Klaas de Jonge. An additional collection is held at the Basler Afrika Bibliographien. The organization ceased to exist under the NiZA name in 2012, but its legacy continues through ActionAid Nederland and its archived materials.
