Overview

Naturum is a visitor and information center in Sweden. According to Naturvårdsverket, a naturum is a center for visitors to a particular nature area and is an activity with activities, not just a building and exhibition. It is intended to give visitors knowledge about nature and its values and to inspire them to go out and discover more, functioning as a gateway to nature in general and to a particular nature area in particular. Naturvårdsverket is responsible for promoting, developing and inspiring naturum activities in Sweden, and for following up and evaluating the work at the naturum. It finances the state naturum and may in some cases also contribute financial means to other naturum. Naturum is part of the nature guidance found in protected nature in Sweden.

On 14 September 2017, Naturvårdsverket decided that the possibility of, and the size of, start-up grants for new non-state naturum would be assessed individually, and that ongoing operational grants would no longer be given to these.
