Overview

National Stock Exchange of India Limited, commonly known as NSE, is a Mumbai-based financial-market infrastructure institution and one of India's principal securities exchanges. It was incorporated in 1992 in response to concerns about transparency, access and modernization in India's equity markets. The exchange was developed with government support and institutional participation, following the recommendations of the Pherwani Committee and a blueprint prepared by officials and specialists associated with the Industrial Development Bank of India. Its founding model sought to move beyond the closed trading-member structures that had characterized earlier Indian exchange activity: qualified participants meeting defined experience and financial requirements could obtain access, while the exchange used centralized electronic trading and screen-based price discovery. NSE began operations in the wholesale debt market in June 1994 and entered the equities market in November of the same year. Its electronic architecture helped standardize order matching, improve visibility of prices and reduce the importance of physical trading floors. Within its first year of equity operations, its daily turnover had surpassed that of the Bombay Stock Exchange, making NSE a central force in the transformation of Indian securities trading. The exchange subsequently expanded into index and single-stock derivatives in 2000, currency derivatives in 2008, debt products, exchange-traded funds, real-estate and infrastructure investment vehicles, and market-data and technology services. Its best-known market indicator is the NIFTY 50, launched in 1996 and designed to represent large, liquid companies listed in India. NSE's broader index business is operated through NSE Indices and covers broad-market, sectoral, thematic, strategy and fixed-income benchmarks. The exchange also operates or supports platforms and subsidiaries covering clearing, data, technology, financial education, international trading and listings for smaller companies. NSE EMERGE, introduced in 2012, provides a market route for qualifying small and medium-sized enterprises and emerging businesses. NSE International Exchange, established in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City in 2017, extends the group's exchange infrastructure into an international financial-services hub. By the end of 2024, the exchange reported 2,671 listed companies, including mainboard issuers and companies on NSE EMERGE, with aggregate listed-company capitalization of approximately ₹438.9 lakh crore. Its product ecosystem included equity securities, equity and index derivatives, bonds and other debt instruments, exchange-traded funds, real-estate investment trusts, infrastructure investment trusts and currency contracts. NSE also operates the Social Stock Exchange, launched in 2023 to provide a regulated fund-raising route for eligible social enterprises and nonprofit organizations. Beyond trading, NSE has built a substantial financial-literacy and professional-certification role. Through NSE Academy and related programs, it provides market education, examinations, simulations and certifications for students, investors and professionals. It has worked with universities on finance-related programs and has offered tools such as NSE Learn to Trade to simulate professional market activity. The institution has also faced regulatory scrutiny, most prominently over alleged preferential access and manipulation connected with its co-location systems, as well as other allegations involving market abuse. Despite these controversies, NSE remains a major component of India's capital-market infrastructure and one of the world's most active venues for equity derivatives.

History

NSE emerged from a reform agenda aimed at making India's securities markets more transparent, accessible and technologically consistent. In 1991, the Pherwani Committee recommended structural changes to the country's capital markets. A government-supported group of public-sector institutions subsequently helped establish the exchange, while a team associated with IDBI developed its operating blueprint. The institution was incorporated in 1992 and was designed around nationwide electronic access rather than a traditional exchange floor or a restricted broker community. NSE opened its wholesale debt-market segment on 30 June 1994 and commenced equity trading on 3 November 1994. Its centralized, screen-based order-matching system provided continuous visibility of bids and offers and made trading less dependent on physical location. This model quickly attracted market participants, and within roughly a year NSE's daily turnover exceeded that of the Bombay Stock Exchange. The exchange's early growth helped establish electronic execution, dematerialized securities and more standardized market access as defining features of Indian trading. The derivatives business began on 12 June 2000. NSE later added currency derivatives in August 2008 and expanded its international product ambitions through contracts linked to overseas benchmarks, including FTSE 100 derivatives introduced in 2012. Its index franchise developed in parallel: the NIFTY 50 was launched in April 1996 with a base value of 1,000 based on a November 1995 base date. NIFTY and related indices became widely used as market benchmarks, investment references and the basis for derivative products. NSE broadened its issuer and product ecosystem in the 2010s. NSE EMERGE, launched in 2012, created a dedicated listing route for qualifying SMEs and startups. A debt-focused trading platform followed in 2013. The group established NSE International Exchange in GIFT City in 2017, adding an international multi-asset venue to its wider infrastructure. The exchange also became a significant venue for ETFs and later supported listings of infrastructure investment trusts and real-estate investment trusts. The organization now operates as a group of related market-infrastructure and financial-services businesses, including clearing, indices, data, technology, investment, academy and international-exchange entities. In 2023 it launched the Social Stock Exchange to support capital raising by qualifying social enterprises. NSE's scale is reflected in its large listed-company base, substantial equity and derivatives activity, and extensive investor registration. It also has an education mission through NSE Academy, market simulations, university collaborations and examinations under its financial-market certification programs. NSE's expansion has not been free of controversy. The co-location matter generated allegations that some brokers obtained unfair advantages in accessing exchange data or systems. Investigations and proceedings by India's securities regulator led to findings and sanctions involving the exchange, former executives and other parties, while separate market-abuse cases have involved alleged insider trading and manipulation in individual securities. These events prompted scrutiny of governance, surveillance, access controls and conflict-management practices. Nevertheless, NSE remains one of India's central capital-market institutions and a globally significant venue for derivatives and cash-equity trading.
