Overview
National Ryutsu Sangyo Co., Ltd. is a Japanese company headquartered in Chuo-ku, Osaka, best known for operating the discount ticket (kinken) shop chain under the trade name Ticket Japan (チケットジャパン). The business was originally founded in June 1975 in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, and was incorporated as National Ryutsu Sangyo Co., Ltd. in May 1977. It buys and sells a wide range of tickets and gift cards, including Shinkansen and airline tickets, book cards, gift certificates, shareholder benefit coupons, travel vouchers, postage stamps, and revenue stamps. The company is unrelated to the electronics manufacturer Panasonic, despite the shared word "National" in its name. At its peak the company operated 17 stores and recorded sales of approximately 28.59 billion yen in the fiscal year ending November 2003. However, failed investments during the bubble era, debt-financed store openings, and an accumulated excess of liabilities over assets left it financially fragile. The 2008 global financial crisis further reduced business demand. Although management efforts such as strengthening shareholder benefit coupon and foreign currency exchange operations returned the company to profitability, it could not generate enough funds to repay its debts. In March 2017 the head office was moved from Takamatsu to the Osaka Ekimae No. 2 Building, and on April 3, 2017 the old company filed for civil rehabilitation proceedings at the Osaka District Court, with liabilities of about 2.5 billion yen. The business was transferred on May 31, 2017 to a new company, also named National Ryutsu Sangyo Co., Ltd., which had been established in March 2017. The old company changed its name to Acti Tsusho Co., Ltd. on June 5, 2017, and its corporate personality was dissolved on July 17, 2018, along with affiliated companies. The new company initially continued the trade name "Japan Gift Service," then became a wholly owned subsidiary of the travel platform AirTrip in August 2019 through a simplified share exchange, after which the trade name was changed to "AirTrip Ticket." In March 2021, AirTrip transferred all shares of the new company to Cabin Co., Ltd., a company also based in Osaka that operates the "Ticket CABIN" discount ticket chain. The trade name was maintained as "AirTrip Ticket" for a while, but on June 1, 2022 it was changed to "Ticket Japan." The company continues to operate discount ticket shops, primarily in the Kinki region and in its original home market of Takamatsu.
History
National Ryutsu Sangyo Co., Ltd. traces its origins to June 1975, when the business was founded in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture. It was incorporated as a stock company on May 31, 1977. The company operated discount ticket shops (kinken shops) in the Kinki region and in its home market of Takamatsu, buying and selling Shinkansen tickets, airline tickets, book cards, gift certificates, shareholder benefit coupons, travel vouchers, stamps, and revenue stamps. At its peak it ran 17 stores and posted sales of 28,587,810,000 yen in the fiscal year ending November 2003. Despite its scale, the company faced serious financial difficulties. Investments made during the bubble era failed, and its expansion relied heavily on borrowed funds for store openings. It accumulated substantial debt and fell into excess liabilities. The 2008 global financial crisis further depressed business demand. Management responded by strengthening the handling of shareholder benefit coupons and foreign currency exchange, which returned the company to profitability, but the funds generated were insufficient to cover debt repayments. In March 2017 the head office was relocated from Takamatsu to the Osaka Ekimae No. 2 Building. On April 3, 2017, the old company applied for civil rehabilitation proceedings at the Osaka District Court and received a commencement decision the same day, with total liabilities of approximately 2.5 billion yen. The business was transferred on May 31, 2017 to a new company, National Ryutsu Sangyo Co., Ltd., which had been established on March 28, 2017, with its head office in Minamisenba, Chuo-ku, Osaka. The old company changed its corporate name to Acti Tsusho Co., Ltd. on June 5, 2017. Its affiliates ONG Service, ONG, and Acti received special liquidation orders from the Osaka District Court on August 22, 2017. The corporate personalities of ONG Service, ONG, and Acti were dissolved on January 10, 2018, and Acti Tsusho was dissolved on July 17, 2018. The new company initially continued the trade name "Japan Gift Service." On August 6, 2019, it became a wholly owned subsidiary of AirTrip through a simplified share exchange, and the trade name was changed to "AirTrip Ticket." On February 1, 2020, the head office was moved from Minamisenba to Semba Chuo in Chuo-ku, Osaka, the same location as the AirTrip Ticket Hommachi No. 9 Building store. On February 24, 2021, AirTrip announced a business alliance with Cabin Co., Ltd., an Osaka-based operator of the "Ticket CABIN" discount ticket chain, and the transfer of all shares of the new company to Cabin. The shares were transferred in March 2021, making the new company a wholly owned subsidiary of Cabin. The trade name "AirTrip Ticket" was maintained for a time, but on June 1, 2022 it was changed to "Ticket Japan." The company continues to operate discount ticket shops under the Ticket Japan name.
