History

The Institut National des Arts was created in December 1967 under the name 'Conservatoire National de Musique et d'Art Dramatique'. It was originally designed for the further training of people with natural potential in music and theatre. In 1971, the Conservatory became the 'Institut National des Arts', and by presidential ordinance No. 81-0171 of 7 October 1971, INA was integrated into the national university system as part of the 'Université Nationale du Zaïre'. Ten years later, a new reform of Congolese higher and university education led to the autonomy of teaching institutions. INA, a higher artistic institute, was institutionally attached to the 'Conseil d'Administration des Instituts Supérieurs Techniques, Artistiques et Technologiques' and is part of the Ministry of Higher and University Education. It has a student population of around 1,500, a teaching staff of 150 (professors, heads of works, and assistants), and a research center that hosts many professionals, including nationally and internationally recognized artists, writers, academics, researchers, and masters. In addition to Congolese students, INA is a regional institution receiving students from other African countries such as Angola, Congo-Brazzaville, Cameroon, Gabon, and the Central African Republic. As a university institution, INA supports national scientific and cultural development as well as cultural diplomacy work.
