NAQT began naming national champions in 1997. It began naming community college national champions in 2002, initially as part of the Division II competition at its Intercollegiate Championship Tournament, and ran its first national championship tournament purely for community colleges in 2009, the Community College Championship Tournament (CCCT). The Intercollegiate Championship Tournament (ICT) is described as the premier quiz bowl tournament at the collegiate level, with titles coveted by hundreds of schools and thousands of players throughout North America and the United Kingdom; each winter, Sectional Championship Tournaments are held and top teams qualify for the ICT.
