Overview

Nasty Vinyl is a German punk record label based in Hanover. It was founded in 1991 by Horst Barthel, who had already been running Schlawiner Records since 1988, together with Michael Krapf. The label emerged from the German punk and hardcore scene and became known for releasing both contemporary punk bands and historical East German punk recordings. Through the mediation of Andreas Höhn of the Pissed Spitzels, Nasty Vinyl issued old GDR punk recordings by bands such as Schleim-Keim and Müllstation, as well as the Sicher gibt es bessere Zeiten compilations. Over its history the label has released more than 150 different singles, LPs and CDs, including the BRD Punk Terror CD series. Among the better-known groups associated with the label are Scattergun, Fuckin' Faces and Rasta Knast. After the death of Horst Barthel in 2005, Nasty Vinyl has been continued by Andreas Höhn of Höhnie Records. The label remains a niche but respected name in the German punk underground, with its official website still carrying the BRD Punk Terror branding.

History

Nasty Vinyl was founded in 1991 in Hanover, Germany, by Horst Barthel and Michael Krapf. Barthel had already been active in the independent music business since 1988, running Schlawiner Records. The new label was established within the German punk and hardcore scene and soon became connected with the Hanover punk network. A key development came through Andreas Höhn of the band Pissed Spitzels, whose mediation led Nasty Vinyl to release old East German (GDR) punk recordings by groups such as Schleim-Keim and Müllstation. The label also issued the Sicher gibt es bessere Zeiten compilation series, which collected punk material from that era. Over the following years Nasty Vinyl built a catalogue of more than 150 different singles, LPs and CDs. Its BRD Punk Terror CD series became one of its best-known projects, documenting German punk. Among the bands associated with the label were Scattergun, Fuckin' Faces and Rasta Knast. In 2005, co-founder Horst Barthel died. Since then, Nasty Vinyl has been continued by Andreas Höhn under the umbrella of his own label, Höhnie Records. The label's official website continues to operate and carries the BRD Punk Terror branding.
