Overview
Nasjonal jazzscene (the National Jazz Scene) is a Norwegian foundation that operates the Victoria concert venue at Karl Johans gate in Oslo. Its concert programme spans the entire jazz genre, and the organisation receives support from the Ministry of Culture. The scene grew out of an initiative by Norsk Jazzforum, which in the late 1990s launched a plan for a national gathering place for jazz. In 2003 the Norwegian Arts Council awarded NOK 500,000 to further develop Jazzforum's project, which at that time involved two stages with different profiles, Blå and Smuget. The following year the clubs Cosmopolite and Herr Nilsen were also included in the project, while Smuget later left the collaboration that same year. In 2005 the jazz scene entered the national budget. The Ministry of Culture and the Arts Council wanted the scene to have only one venue, and Norsk Jazzforum settled on Cosmopolite. The opening concert took place on 15 September 2005. The following year former Minister of Culture Valgerd Svarstad Haugland was elected chair of Nasjonal jazzscene. That autumn Cosmopolite expanded with the side stage Belleville. These two locations made up the jazz scene until spring 2008, when the clubs had to move from their premises in Møllergata because the building owner chose to convert the property into a hotel. While Cosmopolite and Belleville moved to Soria Moria at Torshov, Nasjonal jazzscene chose to remain in the city centre. The foundation then rented the former cinema and theatre premises Victoria on Karl Johan. Today Nasjonal jazzscene presents a broad programme of Norwegian and international jazz artists at Victoria, with concerts such as Paal Nilssen-Love & Vestnorsk Jazzensemble, Red Kite, Marte Eberson & Jon Eberson, Solveig Slettahjell kvartett and The Brazz Brothers appearing on its calendar. The organisation also maintains a newsletter and ticket sales through its website.
