Overview
Nasha Zorya (Ukrainian: «Наша зоря», literally "Our Star") is a weekly Ukrainian-language socio-political newspaper published in Selydove, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. It is the official municipal newspaper of the Selydove City Council and serves the city of Selydove together with the settlements under its administration — Ukrainsk, Hirnyk, Kurakhivka, Tsukuryne, Hostre and Komyshivka — as well as villages of Pokrovsk Raion. The paper is published in Ukrainian and covers local news, city council affairs, social issues, medicine, official announcements and community life. The newspaper was founded on 28 August 1938 under the name «Большевистский путь» (Bolshevist Path). Until 9 July 1944 it was published in Russian, after which it switched to Ukrainian. In 1952 it was renamed «Зоря комунізму» (Star of Communism), and in 1991, following a readers' vote, it adopted its current name «Наша зоря». The choice of name kept the key word "Zorya" (star) while avoiding confusion with an already registered newspaper named «Зоря» in Krasnyi Lyman, Donetsk Oblast. Over more than 75 years of publication, nearly 10,300 issues have appeared, with print runs ranging from 2,000 to 12,000 copies. The editorial tradition — writing for the people and about the people, about the life of the city — has been maintained since the first issue in 1938. The newspaper has received numerous awards, including a Certificate of Honour from the State Committee for Information Policy, Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine in 2003, and laureate titles in the «Преса Донеччини» (Press of Donchyna) creative competitions in 2011 and 2012. In total, Nasha Zorya has received 15 diplomas from professional competitions. Since April 2015 the newspaper has maintained its own website at http://nashazorya.ucoz.ua/, where it publishes articles, city council news and community announcements. The site is hosted on the uCoz platform and contains a catalogue of over 1,200 materials. The newspaper is owned by the Selydove City Council and the editorial staff, making it a municipal publication rather than a private commercial enterprise.
History
The Selydove city newspaper was founded on 28 August 1938 under the name «Большевистский путь» (Bolshevist Path). Until 9 July 1944 it was published in Russian, after which it switched to Ukrainian. In 1952 the newspaper was renamed «Зоря комунізму» (Star of Communism). In 1991, following a readers' vote to choose a new name in line with the times, it was decided to keep the key word "Zorya" (star). Since a newspaper named «Зоря» was already registered in Donetsk Oblast (in Krasnyi Lyman), the name «Наша зоря» (Our Star) was chosen. Over the years the newspaper was edited by notable journalists. In 1938 the editor was S. B. Oleinikov; from 1939 — A. Zinchenko; from 1943 — O. Lytvynenko; from 1944 — O. Ye. Holomozenko; from 1956 — Petro Korniiovych Verbovskyi; from 1974 — Nina Semenivna Popova; from 1988 — Yurii Anatoliiovych Smolenskyi; and from 2013 — Nataliia Volodymyrivna Hamidova. Over 75 years, nearly 10,300 issues were published, with print runs ranging from 2,000 to 12,000 copies. The tradition from the first issue in 1938 of writing for the people and about the people, about the life of the city, remains to this day. In terms of awards and distinctions, the publication has repeatedly been a laureate and winner of various creative competitions organised by the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine and the Department for Press and Information Affairs. In 2003 the editorial team was awarded a Certificate of Honour by the State Committee for Information Policy, Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine. In 2011 the newspaper became a laureate of the «Преса Донеччини-2011» creative competitions in the nomination "Youth of Donbas" and "На всех одна победа" (for the 68th anniversary of the liberation of Donbas), organised by the secretariat of the Donetsk Oblast Union of Journalists. In 2012 the newspaper became a laureate of the «Преса Донеччини-2012» competition in the nomination "Native Land". In total, over the years of its existence, Nasha Zorya has received 15 diplomas from professional competitions. The city newspaper also has many local commendations; for fruitful cooperation in 2012–2013, Nasha Zorya received letters of thanks from the Selydove City Council, the Krasnoarmiisk United State Tax Inspectorate and the Council of Labour Veterans. Since April 2015 the newspaper has had its own website at http://nashazorya.ucoz.ua/.
