Overview

Narovlya Hydraulic Equipment Plant (ОАО «Наровлянский завод гидроаппаратуры», also known by its Russian abbreviation NZGA) is a Belarusian manufacturing enterprise based in the town of Narovlya in the Gomel Region. Founded in 1976 by order of the USSR Ministry of Machine-Tool and Tool Industry, the plant began operations in early 1977 and is today one of the town-forming enterprises of Narovlya, alongside the Krasny Mozyryanin confectionery factory. It operates as a daughter enterprise of Minsk Tractor Works (MTZ) and is part of the MTZ-Holding group. The plant's product range has evolved considerably since its Soviet-era origins. Its first output in February 1977 was a batch of 250 folding umbrellas (model DZhS 8), and for much of its early history it produced consumer goods such as umbrellas and air filters. In 2009 it organized production of high-pressure hoses (RVD), which became its principal industrial line, supplied mainly to Minsk Tractor Works. By 2018 its output included special clothing, spare-parts bags (ZIP bags), work mittens, bed linen, high-pressure hoses and air filters, all largely directed to MTZ. The enterprise is closely tied to its parent company. Its main orders come from MTZ, and its sales markets are limited. According to Russian Wikipedia, the high-pressure hose production for tractors is not high-technology, equipment wear reaches up to 70%, and the Narovlya hydraulic equipment operation is loss-making; comparable parts could be bought more cheaply in China, but MTZ supports the plant as a matter of import substitution. In 2010 the average number of employees was 208. By 2017 most workers were engaged in sewing special clothing, with up to 85,000 pairs of gloves and mittens sent to MTZ monthly. The company presents itself on its official website with a motto of "High Quality!" and emphasizes long-term, mutually beneficial cooperation with clients and partners, listing values of professionalism, self-improvement, cooperation, efficiency and initiative. It remains an active industrial employer in southeastern Belarus, though its fortunes are closely bound to those of the Minsk Tractor Works holding.

History

Narovlya Hydraulic Equipment Plant was founded in 1976 by order of the Minister of the Machine-Tool and Tool Industry of the USSR. The plant's design was developed by the Kaluga branch of Giproniimash of the Ministry of Machine-Tool Industry, under the leadership of chief project engineer V. V. Senatov. In January 1977 the first production facilities were commissioned, with an annual output volume of 500,000 rubles, and S. I. Milevsky was appointed plant director. The first products were released in February 1977 — a batch of 250 DZhS 8 folding umbrellas. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the plant survived by being included in the Minsk Tractor Works production association. In 2009 it organized the production of high-pressure hoses (RVD), which became its main industrial product line. In 2014 it became a daughter society within the newly created MTZ-Holding. As of 2010, the average number of employees was 208. By 2017, most workers were engaged in sewing special clothing, with up to 85,000 pairs of gloves and mittens sent to MTZ monthly. According to Russian Wikipedia, the production of high-pressure hoses for tractors is not high-technology, equipment wear reaches up to 70%, parts are still turned in the old way and 60% of material goes to shavings. The plant is fully dependent on its "parent" MTZ — main orders come from there, sales markets are limited, the Narovlya hydraulic equipment operation is loss-making, and essentially the same parts for Belarusian tractors could be bought more cheaply in China, but MTZ supports the plant as import substitution, albeit unprofitable. The workshops have changed little since Soviet times, with information boards calling for hard work, names of leading workers and work evaluation sheets. The production itself cannot be called unique or high-technology; equipment wear is up to 70%. Steel is loaded into machines and the machine automatically turns nuts; finished parts are joined and sent to the final workshop on the second floor, where finished steel parts are inserted into a rubber hose and secured with a press, producing a high-pressure hose. As of 2018, the plant's products included special clothing, ZIP bags, mittens, bed linen, as well as high-pressure hoses (RVD) and air filters supplied to Minsk Tractor Works. The plant remains one of the town-forming enterprises of Narovlya, Gomel Region, Belarus, alongside the Krasny Mozyryanin confectionery factory.
