Overview
Narodny Tyl (Ukrainian: Народний Тил, meaning "People's Rear") is a Ukrainian volunteer organization founded in 2014 in response to the armed conflict with Russia in eastern Ukraine. It is one of the leading volunteer groups supporting Ukrainian military personnel, providing a wide range of supplies and services that the state was unable to furnish, especially in the early years of the conflict. The organization began as informal volunteer activity in spring 2014, initially topping up mobile phone credit for soldiers and gradually expanding into broad support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and volunteer battalions. By autumn 2014 it had 30–40 active volunteers, and by March 2017 around 15. It was officially registered as a public organization in late August 2014, after a naming dispute with politician and businessman Lev Partskhaladze, who had intended to register the same name; he subsequently renamed his own organization "Narodny Tyl Ukrainy" and eventually "Nadiyny Tyl." Narodny Tyl's activities span multiple areas. It supplies clothing, camouflage, stoves, helmets, body armor, individual first-aid kits, collimator and optical sights, thermal imagers, off-road vehicles, and equipped ambulances. It also organizes the production of load-bearing vests, pouches, and sleeping bags. As state provisioning improved, the organization shifted away from supplying uniforms, body armor, and helmets, focusing instead on needs the state does not meet. Notable projects include the Medical Narodny Tyl, which delivers NATO-standard individual first-aid kits containing anti-shock medications, Celox hemostatic agent, CAT tourniquets, and pneumothorax needles; "Wings of the People's Rear," which supplies reconnaissance drones and trains operators; "Wheels of the People's Rear," which provides repaired, armored, and repainted vehicles; "Tablets of the People's Rear," which distributes tablets loaded with maps and military software; and "Children of the People's Rear" and "Families of the People's Rear," which support children and wives of fallen soldiers. The "Artistic People's Rear" project holds auctions of paintings to fund other projects. In its first year, the organization raised about 40 million hryvnias in donations. It also accepts non-monetary aid, including food collections in Kyiv supermarkets. By July 2015 it had delivered 350 tons of food, 164 thermal imagers, and over 300 sights, among other aid. Several volunteers have received state and departmental awards, including the Order of Merit and the Order of Princess Olga. Narodny Tyl remains active as of the latest available information, continuing to support Ukrainian military personnel and their families.
History
Narodny Tyl emerged from volunteer efforts that began in spring 2014, during the events in Crimea. The future founders initially helped by topping up mobile phone credit for military personnel, and this gradually grew into broad support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and volunteer battalions. By autumn 2014, the organization united 30–40 volunteers who regularly participated in its work; by March 2017, the number was up to 15. In August 2014, a conflict arose around the name "Narodny Tyl" when politician and businessman Lev Partskhaladze intended to register it for himself. After volunteers expressed outrage, he changed the name of his organization to "Narodny Tyl Ukrainy" (People's Rear of Ukraine). Eventually, the new public organization was named "Nadiyny Tyl" (Reliable Rear), and the incident was resolved. At the end of August, the volunteer association "Narodny Tyl" officially registered as a public organization. On 20 December 2014, to mark the half-year of Narodny Tyl's work, an open house day was held at the organization's office. Visitors could learn about the activities of various units and see samples of equipment, and ask volunteers questions. In August 2014, volunteers of Narodny Tyl together with "Sestry Peremohy" (Sisters of Victory) began a project to translate a French manual on urban combat techniques. By the end of the year, 500 copies of this 245-page manual had been printed. In 2014, volunteers of the "Narodny Tyl" group created the "Myrotvorets" website, which hosts a database with information about terrorists. Thanks to this database, terrorists and their accomplices are detained at checkpoints; special services of various countries have also shown interest in the collected information. In the first year of work, the organization raised about 40 million hryvnias in donations. It also accepts non-monetary aid, including organizing food collections in Kyiv supermarkets. As of July 2015, the military had received, among other things, 350 tons of food, 164 thermal imagers, and over 300 sights. As the volume of work increased, separate units were created: Medical Narodny Tyl: The medical unit delivers both general-purpose medicines (anti-inflammatory and antipyretic drugs, antibiotics) and specialized individual first-aid kits assembled to NATO standards. The kits include anti-shock medications, the hemostatic agent Celox, CAT (Combat-Application-Tourniquet) tourniquets, and a pneumothorax needle. As of October 2014, 3,337 such kits had been delivered to the troops; by December, over five thousand; and by September 2015, 14 thousand. Wings of the People's Rear: This project provides military units with unmanned aerial vehicles for reconnaissance and fire correction. Volunteers assemble quadcopters from ready-made components and train future operators. By the end of 2014, 13 devices had been sent to the front; by July 2015, 34, and over 200 operators had been trained. Wheels of the People's Rear: The project supplies vehicles for reconnaissance, special forces, and medics, and provides their repair and equipment. Off-road vehicles and minibuses are converted, armored, and painted in protective colors. In the first half-year of activity (as of December 2014), 37 such vehicles and 5 ambulances were prepared and delivered. As of March 2015, Narodny Tyl had delivered 59 vehicles to the military; by September, 104 (25 of which were received as gifts). Many vehicles were imported from European countries. As of March 2017, it no longer imports new vehicles but continues to service and equip old ones. In total, over 120 off-road vehicles were imported. Tablets of the People's Rear: The project began in November 2014 with tablet computers donated by the Ukrainian representative office of ASUS. Maps, navigation, and special software, as well as military textbooks, are installed on the tablets. Children of the People's Rear and Families of the People's Rear: These are projects to help children and wives of fallen military personnel. The organization began working with children in 2015, and in 2016 sent 150 children on vacation to Bulgaria and 250 to the Carpathians. In November 2017, Narodny Tyl reported providing support to 253 mothers and 593 children over the entire previous period. Artistic People's Rear: Within this project, auctions are held to sell paintings by famous artists. All funds received from the sale of artworks go to finance other projects of Narodny Tyl. The project coordinator is Tetiana Dzhafarova. Awards: Some volunteers of the Narodny Tyl association have been recognized with state and departmental awards: - Tuka Heorhii Borysovych — Order of Merit, III degree (23 August 2014); - Balan ("Sinitsyn") Roman Oleksandrovych — Order of Merit, III degree (23 August 2014); - Huk Iryna Oleksandrivna — Order of Princess Olga, III degree (4 December 2014), medal "For Assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine" (30 November 2016), distinction of the President of Ukraine "National Legend of Ukraine" (2023); - Fediai Natalia Oleksandrivna — Order of Princess Olga, III degree (4 December 2014); - Vytvytska Kateryna Volodymyrivna — Order of Princess Olga...
