Overview

Narodnaja Asvieta (Belarusian: Народная асвета, literally "People's Education") was a Belarusian state book publishing house founded on 1 April 1951 as a specialized enterprise for the production of educational literature. It was the leading publisher of Belarusian textbooks and teaching-methodical literature, operating under state orders to supply the country's general secondary education system. Its core activity was fulfilling the state order of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus for the publication of textbooks and teaching aids for schools, and it also issued socially significant literature commissioned by the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Belarus. Each year the publishing house released more than 200 titles of educational books, including textbooks, teaching aids, chrestomathies, didactic materials, workbooks, methodical manuals, dictionaries, popular-science and reference literature, as well as books printed in Braille. This made it a central supplier of learning materials for institutions providing general secondary education in Belarus. In 2023 the publishing house came under the control of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus. It ceased to exist in March 2024. Its legacy is tied to the production of Belarusian-language educational and methodical literature, where it was described as a leader among publishers in that field.
