Overview
nanoSPACE s.r.o. is a Czech company founded in 2012 in Domažlice by Jiří Kůs and Stanislav Jiřinec. It develops and sells products made with nanofibers, aimed primarily at people with allergies and asthma. The company describes itself as a 100% Czech manufacturer of nanofiber bedding for allergy sufferers and as the largest seller of Czech nanoproducts in the Czech Republic. It is a founding member of the Czech Nanotechnology Industries Association and participates in the "Czech Republic is Nano" project. From the outset, nanoSPACE focused on anti-allergy products using nanotechnology. In 2014 it became the first company in the world to produce barrier covers from nanofibers, and it also launched hand-sewn children's toys called "gaučáci" whose fabric inhibited the multiplication of dust mites. In 2016 it introduced mite-proof bedding and duvets made of nano cotton. Its portfolio later expanded to include respirators with nanofibers, antiviral scarves, and nano masks. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 dramatically accelerated the company's growth. Demand for protective equipment surged, and nanoSPACE scaled up production of nanofiber masks, supplying hospitals and government bodies. In 2020 the company reported turnover of CZK 100 million, sold one million nanofiber masks, a quarter of a million nano respirators, and tens of thousands of antiviral scarves. By August 2020 it had become the largest online seller of Czech nanotechnology products in the Czech Republic. In 2021 it continued to expand, investing in logistics and warehouses and entering markets such as Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom through Amazon and trading partners. Today nanoSPACE remains a private Czech company focused on nanofiber-based consumer health products, particularly bedding and respiratory protection, and is an active promoter of Czech nanotechnology both domestically and abroad.
History
nanoSPACE s.r.o. was founded in 2012 in Domažlice, Czech Republic, by Jiří Kůs and Stanislav Jiřinec. From the beginning, the team focused on developing anti-allergy products using nanotechnology. In 2014, nanoSPACE became the first company in the world to produce barrier covers from nanofibers. In the same year, it launched hand-sewn children's toys called "gaučáci," whose fabric prevented the multiplication of dust mites. On 27 November 2014, Jiří Kůs, together with representatives of 11 other nanotechnology companies, founded the Czech Nanotechnology Industries Association to represent the interests of Czech companies in the field, build positive PR for nanotechnologies, and foster cooperation between commercial and research sectors. In early 2015, nanoSPACE participated in the creation of the "Czech Republic is Nano" project, which aims to inform the public about the achievements of Czech scientists and researchers in nanotechnology. In 2016, nanoSPACE introduced mite-proof bedding and duvets made of nano cotton. In May 2018, the company attended the TechConnect trade fair and conference in Anaheim, California. Besides anti-allergy toys and mite-proof bedding, nanoSPACE expanded its portfolio to include respirators with nanofibers. On 23 October 2018, the Czech Embassy in London, in cooperation with the CzechInvest office in London, organized the second annual presentation of Czech companies and research centers active in nanotechnology. Eleven Czech companies, including nanoSPACE, participated, aiming to strengthen Czech-British cooperation in the rapidly developing field before Brexit. In early 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic spread and no vaccine was available, interest in masks surged. nanoSPACE saw increased orders for antiviral face masks, scarves, and respirators, and customers from Poland and Slovakia began seeking out the company. Following the announcement of the first COVID-19 cases, mite-proof bedding sold out on the Czech market. nanoSPACE also faced a shortage of respiratory masks with nanotechnologies due to a delayed shipment from China. Thanks to customer interest, the company's sales over a few days in March equaled its entire 2019 sales. In mid-March, regional inspections of manufacturers and distributors of scarce respirators began shortly after a regulation took effect that companies could sell them only to the state. Financial office inspections focused on compliance with maximum prices for FFP3 protective equipment. As a result, nanoSPACE had to cancel all orders for protective equipment, including those from laboratories and other medical facilities. In Písek, where mite-proof bedding was produced, the company began improvised production of nano masks. nanoSPACE obtained material and within two weeks produced 150,000 masks for hospitals in České Budějovice and Písek. The management also sought to involve more South Bohemian textile companies to maximize daily production capacity. The company charged hospitals cost price and, with cooperation from companies Kvalitex, ACE sport, Katy ateliér, Otavan Strakonice, and Luckwest, was able to produce 10,000 masks with nanomembrane per day. In late April 2020, nanoSPACE launched a new e-shop. Website traffic rose to 10,000 visits per day, compared to approximately 100 users per day in the past. In May, nanoSPACE announced it would deliver 200,000 nano masks to the Ministry of the Interior by the end of May thanks to a new production line. It stabilized cash flow and could invest in new products. It returned to bedding production and explored entry to the Alza.cz e-shop and the Canadian market. Within days, it developed the first prototype of its own antiviral scarf, using the best available nanofiber membrane from the Roudnice company PARDAM. The company also started selling nano masks from the Zlín company SPUR and nano filters. Due to a large increase in sales, nanoSPACE received a notice from the financial office in mid-May. According to the Financial Administration, this was standard procedure because the company's expenses and profits had suddenly increased. Marian Jurečka, chairman of KDU-ČSL and MP, objected and sent an interpellation to then-Minister of Finance Alena Schillerová. Interest in protective equipment also grew due to stricter government restrictions after a rise in coronavirus cases. nanoSPACE processed orders mainly from medical facilities and schools. In August 2020, nanoSPACE became the largest online seller of Czech nanotechnology products in the Czech Republic. On Wednesday, 9 September 2020, nanoSPACE sold more masks with nanofibers than in all of March and April combined. Some of the most sought-after products were temporarily sold out. nanoSPACE's sales in September rose by 200% compared to August. The upward trend continued in October. At the end of 2020, the company reported growth of 4,000% compared to the previous year. It reached turnover of CZK 100 million. It sold one million nanofiber masks, a quarter of a million nano respirators, and several tens of thousands of antiviral scarves. Sales of bedding with nanofiber membrane also increased several times over. In the following weeks, the company continued to break sales records. In the first two months of 2021, the company was at half of its 2020 turnover. It invested in logistics and warehouses. It began addressing sales in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and England through Amazon and trading partners. During April 2021, its products became the best-selling...
