Overview
Nakajima Aircraft Company was one of Japan’s most important aircraft and aircraft-engine manufacturers from the late 1910s until the end of the Second World War. It was founded in 1918 by Chikuhei Nakajima, a naval engineer, and Seibei Kawanishi, a textile-industry entrepreneur, initially under the name Nihon Hikoki, or Nippon Aircraft. The founders separated in 1919, after which Nakajima acquired the company’s factory and renamed the business Nakajima Aircraft Company. With assistance from Japanese military interests, the company developed from an early domestic aviation venture into a large industrial supplier. Nakajima manufactured aircraft for both the Imperial Japanese Army and the Imperial Japanese Navy. Its portfolio covered carrier fighters, land-based fighters, reconnaissance aircraft, trainers, torpedo bombers, heavy bombers, transports, floatplanes, prototypes, and experimental jet aircraft. Among its best-known designs were the Type 97 Fighter, or Ki-27; the Type 1 Fighter, or Ki-43 Hayabusa; the Ki-44 Shoki; the Ki-84 Hayate; the Ki-49 Donryu bomber; the B5N carrier attack aircraft; the B6N Tenzan; the J1N Gekko; and the C6N Saiun. Several of these aircraft became important operational types during the Pacific War. The company also produced aircraft engines, including the Sakae and Homare radial engines, and built licensed versions of foreign designs such as the Bristol Jupiter, Fokker Super Universal, Douglas DC-2, and Douglas DC-3. Nakajima operated a substantial network of facilities, including plants in Tokyo, Musashino, Donryu, Ota, and Koizumi. Its Ota and Koizumi factories became major production sites, although both were heavily damaged by American bombing in 1945. The company also pursued advanced projects late in the war. The Kikka was Japan’s first jet aircraft to fly, while the Ki-201 Karyu and the large Fugaku bomber remained unfinished or projected programs. Nakajima’s work therefore ranged from licensed early aircraft to sophisticated wartime interceptors and ambitious long-range bomber concepts. Japan’s defeat brought the company’s end. Under the Allied occupation, aircraft production and aeronautical research were prohibited, and Nakajima, which had not diversified as extensively into shipbuilding and general machinery as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, could not continue in its existing form. It was dissolved into successor companies established by former managers, engineers, and workers. Former Nakajima personnel later contributed significantly to Japan’s postwar automobile industry. In 1953, the industrial lineage was reorganized as Fuji Heavy Industries, which produced Fuji Rabbit scooters and later Subaru automobiles. A related successor, Fuji Precision Industries, became Prince Motor Company and was later absorbed by Nissan. Fuji Heavy Industries resumed aircraft production in the 1950s, including military trainers and helicopters, and adopted the name Subaru Corporation in 2017. The historical Nakajima company itself remains defunct, while its technical and organizational legacy survives through these successor businesses.
History
Nakajima Aircraft Company originated in 1918 when Chikuhei Nakajima and Seibei Kawanishi established Nihon Hikoki. Nakajima brought naval-engineering experience, while Kawanishi provided an industrial and commercial background outside aviation. The partnership ended in 1919. Nakajima bought out the factory, reportedly with tacit support from the Imperial Japanese Army, and reorganized the business under the Nakajima Aircraft Company name. The new company became Japan’s first domestic aircraft manufacturer and expanded as the country built up its military aviation capability. It developed and manufactured aircraft for both the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy, while also undertaking licensed production and civil aviation work. Its early portfolio included aircraft derived from foreign designs, such as the Fokker Super Universal, Bristol Jupiter-powered engines, and Douglas transports. This combination of domestic design and technology licensing helped Nakajima acquire production expertise across airframes, engines, and aviation systems. During the 1930s, Nakajima became a central participant in Japan’s aviation-industrial expansion. It produced carrier aircraft, reconnaissance floatplanes, trainers, transports, and increasingly capable fighters and bombers. The Type 97 Fighter, Ki-43 Hayabusa, Ki-44 Shoki, B5N carrier attack aircraft, B6N Tenzan, Ki-49 Donryu, J1N Gekko, and later Ki-84 Hayate represented different stages of this development. The company also built radial engines such as the Sakae and Homare, which powered aircraft produced by Nakajima and other Japanese manufacturers. Nakajima’s industrial system included plants in Tokyo, Musashino, Donryu, Ota, and Koizumi. These facilities supported large-scale wartime production, but they also became targets as the air war reached Japan. The Ota plant was visited by Emperor Showa in 1934 and was critically damaged by American bombing in February 1945. The Koizumi plant suffered severe damage in April of the same year. Wartime disruption, resource shortages, and the increasingly difficult strategic situation constrained the company’s ability to complete its programs. The final wartime period saw Nakajima pursue advanced aircraft, including the Kikka, Japan’s first jet aircraft, and projects such as the J5N Tenrai, G8N Renzan, Ki-87, Ki-201 Karyu, and the projected Fugaku long-range bomber. Many late designs remained prototypes or projects because Japan surrendered before they could enter meaningful service. After the war, the Allied occupation prohibited Japanese aircraft production and aeronautical research. Nakajima was especially vulnerable because it had not diversified as broadly into shipbuilding and general machinery as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The company was therefore dissolved, and its former managers, engineers, and workers formed or joined successor enterprises. Their engineering knowledge helped support Japan’s postwar automobile industry. In 1953, the principal corporate successor became Fuji Heavy Industries, associated with Fuji Rabbit scooters and Subaru automobiles. Fuji Precision Industries became Prince Motor Company, whose automotive operations later merged with Nissan in 1966. Fuji Heavy Industries eventually resumed aircraft production for Japan’s Self-Defense Forces and changed its name to Subaru Corporation in 2017. These successors preserve parts of Nakajima’s industrial heritage, but the original aircraft company is defunct.
