Overview
The Nacional'naya izdatel'skaya kompaniya "Ajar" imeni Semena Andreevicha Novgorodova — commonly shortened to «Айар» (Ayar) — is a state-owned book publishing house based in Yakutsk, in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia. It traces its origins to the Yakutskoye knizhnoye izdatel'stvo (Yakut Book Publishing House), founded in 1926 by decision of the regional committee of the VKP(b) and the Council of People's Commissars of the Yakut ASSR. Over the Soviet decades it became the principal publisher of books in the Yakut language and of literature about the region, issuing mass political, technical, educational and literary titles, including series such as «Летопись великой стройки» and «Судьбы, связанные с Якутией». After the dissolution of the Soviet Union the publisher was reorganised. In 1992, by decree of the Government of the Republic of Sakha, it received national status, and in 1993 it was renamed the Natsional'noye knizhnoye izdatel'stvo «Bichik» Respubliki Sakha. In 1999 it left the SakhaPoligrafIzdat company and became a state unitary enterprise. In 2007, by decree of the President of the Republic of Sakha, it was granted the name of Semyon Andreyevich Novgorodov, an early Yakut political and cultural figure. In 2021 it was renamed «Айар». Today «Айар» operates an online store at ayar.ru and sells books in Yakut and Russian, with delivery across Yakutia and to other regions of Russia. Its catalogue spans fiction and non-fiction, regional history, traditions and culture, and works by local authors. The publisher emphasises editorial review and print quality, and positions itself as one of the leading book publishers of the region and a supporter of Yakut-language and local authorship. It remains a state-owned enterprise of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
History
The publishing house was established in 1926 in Yakutsk as the Yakutskoye knizhnoye izdatel'stvo (Yakut Book Publishing House). Its creation followed a decision of the bureau of the regional committee of the VKP(b) dated 2 March 1926 and a resolution of the Council of People's Commissars of the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic dated 30 July 1926. From its early years it served as the main publishing institution for the Yakut ASSR, producing mass political literature, production and technical works, fiction, and textbooks for Yakut schools. Among its notable series were «Летопись великой стройки» (Chronicle of the Great Construction) and «Судьбы, связанные с Якутией» (Fates Connected with Yakutia). After the end of the Soviet period, the publisher was reorganised within the new Russian Federation. On 19 June 1992, by resolution of the Government of the Republic of Sakha, it received national status. In 1993 it was renamed the Natsional'noye knizhnoye izdatel'stvo «Bichik» Respubliki Sakha (National Book Publishing House "Bichik" of the Republic of Sakha). In 1999 the publisher left the SakhaPoligrafIzdat company and became a state unitary enterprise. In 2007, by decree of the President of the Republic of Sakha, it was granted the name of Semyon Andreyevich Novgorodov. In 2021 it was renamed «Айар» (Ayar). In its current form the publisher operates an online store at ayar.ru, offering a catalogue of books in Yakut and Russian, including fiction and non-fiction, regional history, traditions and culture, and works by local authors. It provides delivery across Yakutia and to other regions of Russia, and states that each work undergoes thorough editorial review to ensure print and content quality. It remains a state-owned enterprise of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
