NABU Foundation for National Natural Heritage

The NABU-Stiftung Nationales Naturerbe (NABU Foundation for National Natural Heritage) is an independent foundation under civil law located in Berlin. It was established by Naturschutzbund Deutschland e. V. (NABU) in 2002. The foundation buys and develops valuable conservation land in Germany, and its more than 450 nature paradises provide permanently protected habitat for endangered animals and plants. Its purpose is the promotion of the conservation of nature and landscape maintenance as defined by the Federal and State Nature Conservation Acts.

The NABU-Stiftung Nationales Naturerbe is an independent foundation under civil law located in Berlin. It was established by Naturschutzbund Deutschland e. V. (NABU) in 2002. According to its transparency declaration, it was established by foundation deed on 9 April 2002 and state-approved on 19 April 2002. The Foundation's Executive Board acts as legal representative of the foundation, and the Board is advised and monitored by the Foundation Council, a body consisting of all Presidents of the NABU Federal State Branches. Tight links with NABU are ensured by means of the personal union of the Foundation Board and parts of the democratically elected Executive Board of the Federal Association. Close cooperation with the Federal Association means that the NABU-Stiftung can draw on the support of the national network of honorary NABU members who look after individual nature conservation areas. The foundation's purpose is the promotion of the conservation of nature and landscape maintenance as defined by the Federal and State Nature Conservation Acts and within the meaning of environmental protection. This purpose is pursued in particular on areas acquired, leased or managed by the foundation, by conserving, creating and improving the basis of life for a species-diverse flora and fauna, and by conducting species conservation measures for endangered animals. The foundation buys and develops valuable conservation land in Germany; its more than 450 nature paradises provide permanently protected habitat for endangered animals and plants. By the end of 2025 it had preserved around 27,400 hectares in over 455 protected areas.
