History

MyNetFone was founded in Australia in 2004 by Rene Sugo and Andy Fung as a retail provider of voice-over-internet-protocol services. The company was created during the early expansion of consumer and business internet telephony, when VoIP offered an alternative to conventional fixed-line calling. MyNetFone subsequently became the foundation business of the MNF Group. In 2006, MyNetFone listed on the Australian Securities Exchange and expanded into New Zealand and Singapore. It also began developing combined VoIP and internet offerings for small and medium-sized businesses and enterprise customers. The company’s first reported acquisition was Broad IP in September 2006. During 2007, it introduced MNF On-the-Go, a mobile VoIP service that later included smartphone applications and mobile VoIP software, as well as Follow Me, a call-redirection function capable of forwarding incoming calls to landline or mobile numbers. The company moved more decisively into hosted business communications in 2008. It launched Virtual PBX, a cloud-hosted business phone system, and introduced SIP and VoIP-only phone services. These products allowed businesses to use programmable communications features through internet connectivity rather than relying exclusively on traditional telephone infrastructure. Expansion continued through acquisitions. In 2011, MyNetFone acquired Symbio Networks, described in the reference material as Australia’s largest wholesale VoIP provider at the time. In 2012, it became an accredited provider for Australia’s National Broadband Network and introduced NBN-related plans. The same year brought the acquisitions of CallStream, focused on inbound calling, and Connexus, a business internet provider. MyNetFone also agreed to acquire the network and wholesale business of GoTalk. In July 2012, the Tasmanian Government selected the company to provide telephony services, an early government use of VoIP communications in Australia. PennyTel and iVoiSys were acquired in 2013, extending the group’s retail and reseller footprint. In 2014, the group acquired iBoss, a business involved in billing, provisioning, operations, and central management systems. TNZI was acquired in New Zealand in 2015 for NZ$22.4 million, strengthening international voice-termination activities. As the organization grew beyond a single retail brand, it adopted the MNF Group name in 2015 while retaining MyNetFone as its retail-facing heritage brand. The group’s growth during the 2010s was recognized through a series of business and technology awards, including Forbes Asia’s Best Under a Billion in 2014, Deloitte Technology Fast 500 Asia Pacific recognition in 2015 and 2016, and inclusion in the Australian Financial Review Fast 100 in 2017. The group also acquired Conference Call International in 2017, broadening its collaboration and conferencing capabilities. In August 2021, Vonex acquired MyNetFone’s residential and small-to-medium-business services for A$31 million. The available reference material does not fully describe the subsequent brand architecture or whether every MyNetFone product continued under the same name, so the brand’s current status is not treated as confirmed.
