History

According to the company's own story page, the MBTI was developed in 1943 during WWII by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers, both pioneers of personality assessment, building on Carl Jung's 1921 publication of Psychological Types. In 1956 the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) instrument, developed by Professor Harrison Gough (UC Berkeley), was released for sale. In 1957 the company obtained the rights to the Strong Interest Inventory from Stanford University (then called the Strong Vocational Interest Test). In 1975 it became the exclusive publisher of the MBTI assessment, which became widely available to the psychological community for the first time. In the 1980s it launched the first MBTI qualification program, allowing people outside the field of psychology to access and use the MBTI assessment for the first time, and the company obtained FIRO. In 1998 it purchased Xicom and its catalog of instruments including the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode (TKI). In 2000 it describes a respected, global practitioner community continuing to grow by leveraging its assessment brands. In 2018 it became a B Corp. In the 2020s it states it continues to lean into its trusted science to provide valuable people insights.
