MWI Animal Health is an animal health distributor and technology solutions provider serving veterinarians and producers. Its name derives from the initials of Millard Wallace Ickes, a DVM known as "Doc," who in the mid-1970s converted cages in the back of his Idaho veterinary clinic into storage units, founding a distribution company. In the mid-1970s, based on a decade of running his mixed animal veterinary hospital in Idaho, he recognized that veterinarians in the northwest region were too isolated from manufacturers to receive quality service and too small to qualify for large discounted purchases. He converted cages in the back of his veterinary clinic into storage units, and a distribution company was born. MWI states that the business today operates in the same way Doc's did, recognizing challenges in the animal health industry and developing practical solutions. As it added to its portfolio of companies and joined a best-in-class organization like AmerisourceBergen, it prioritized expanding capabilities and services.
