Overview
MVG Medienproduktion und Vertriebsgesellschaft (originally Misereor Medienproduktion und Vertriebsgesellschaft) was a media and mail-order company based in Aachen, Germany. Founded in 1976 by the Catholic relief organisation Bischöfliches Hilfswerk Misereor, it served as the in-house media production and distribution arm for Misereor and later for other church-related organisations such as Renovabis and the Weltgebetstag der Frauen (World Day of Prayer). The company described itself as an ethically motivated enterprise, offering services in lettershop, mailing, call centre, fulfilment, graphics, media production and editorial work. As a publisher, MVG released titles on development policy and fair trade; as a mail-order retailer, it sold fair-trade food, handicrafts, gifts, books and music CDs under the Weltfairsand brand. Misereor was the sole shareholder. In 2025, following insolvency proceedings, operations ceased due to unprofitability.
History
MVG Medienproduktion und Vertriebsgesellschaft was established in 1976 as Misereor Medienproduktion und Vertriebsgesellschaft by the Bischöfliches Hilfswerk Misereor, the Catholic relief organisation of the German bishops. From its founding, it produced and distributed all materials for Misereor's Lenten campaign (Fastenaktion) and hunger cloth (Hungertuch), as well as school materials and other educational and informational media. In 1996, the company expanded its range to include fair-trade food and gifts as well as books providing information about and from the "One World" context. In 2001, the company was renamed MVG Medienproduktion und Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH. In 2004, the fair-trade assortment was consolidated under the brand "Weltfairsand". Over time, MVG also worked as a service provider for a wide range of organisations, producing and mailing all publications of Misereor and numerous materials for Renovabis, and from 2007 it also distributed all sales materials for the World Day of Prayer (Weltgebetstag). The company received recognition for its ethical orientation, including a Fairtrade Award in March 2012 (third place in the "Trade" category), membership in the "Ethics in Business" initiative in April 2012, and a nomination for the CSR Prize of the German Federal Government and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs in March 2013. Misereor remained the sole shareholder. In 2025, due to unprofitability, operations were discontinued with effect from 1 August 2025 as part of insolvency proceedings.
