Overview
The Muttekopfhütte is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) of the Austrian Alpine Club (Österreichischer Alpenverein, ÖAV), specifically the Sektion Imst-Oberland, located in the Lechtal Alps in Tyrol, Austria. It sits at 1,934 metres above sea level, southeast of the Muttekopf peak. The hut is a base for hiking, climbing, via ferrata, and nature experiences in the surrounding Ruhegebiet (quiet zone) of the Muttekopf. It is reachable from Imst and the Untermarkter Alm in about 1½ hours on foot, or from the top station of the Alpjoch chairlift in 30 minutes. The hut was built in 1874 within two weeks on a site previously used as a camp, and opened before mid-1874. It was extended in 1883/1884, underwent a major renovation in 1892, was extended again in 1907, and was fully refurbished in 2004/2005. The hut is lovingly renovated by the section and the innkeeper, and offers a cosy atmosphere and warm hospitality. It is a starting point for mountain experiences including climbing, hiking, via ferrata, courses, culture, and culinary enjoyment. The Muttekopfhütte is open seasonally; in a recent season it was open from 21 May to 31 August, with renovation work starting on 1 September. Reservations are made via the hut portal of the Alpine Club. The hut also has a shop (Mutte-Shop) and hosts events, courses, and workshops. The surrounding area offers numerous hikes with unique nature impressions, and the hut is a popular destination for both day visitors and overnight guests. The hut is operated by the Sektion Imst-Oberland of the ÖAV, a non-profit alpine association. It is not a commercial company but a traditional alpine refuge, part of the network of huts maintained by the Alpine Club. The Muttekopfhütte is a well-known landmark in the Imst region and a hub for outdoor activities in the Lechtal Alps.
