Overview
Musical Truth (Russian: «Музыкальная правда») is a Russian weekly publication devoted to popular music and the Russian show business, including the media industry. It is published by the Novy Vzglyad Publishing House. The publication was originally registered in autumn 1994 by the Ministry of Press of the Russian Federation under the name «МузОБОЗ» («Музыкальное обозрение»), as the organ of the television programme of the same name. Its declared credo was explicitly pop music; like the television project, it largely ignored jazz, rock and other serious genres. The idea and the name «Музыкальная правда» are said by the founders to have originated in the late 1980s. The publication was launched on the initiative of Ivan Demidov, founder and host of the «МузОБОЗ» programme. Evgeny Y. Dodolev, a former host of the «Взгляд» programme, became a partner in the project. On the recommendation of music producer Yuri Aizenshpis, a long-time friend of both co-founders, the scandalous TV host Otar Kushanashvili was appointed editor-in-chief of the new newspaper. In its early stage, Musical Truth wrote extensively about the creative plans of Ivan Demidov and his television team. Notable events in the publication's history — anniversaries, redesigns and the like — often became occasions for broadcasts of the «Партийная зона» programme, hosted by the weekly's editor-in-chief on the TV-6 channel, which was headed by the co-founder of «Музправда». Besides its main print run of 25,000 copies produced by the Novy Vzglyad Publishing House, «МузОБОЗ»/«Музыкальная правда» from its foundation appeared on Fridays (together with a television programme) as an independent insert in the city daily newspaper «Московская правда». In 1995 several issues were printed in A3 and A4 formats. In 2008 it also appeared in a colour version. Critics noted that Musical Truth was aimed at a teenage reader and spoke to them in their own language, imitating a deliberately mischievous manner with a mixture of jargon and profanity. On the last page of Musical Truth, reports on events in academic music periodically appeared, but these were purely informational materials, present formally and of a random nature. At the premiere ceremony of the «Серебряная калоша» award for the most dubious achievements in show business, established by the «Серебряный дождь» radio station (26 April 1996), «МузОбоз» was named «the softest publication of the year», although the contenders included «Экспресс-газета», the newspaper «Женские дела» and the magazine «Алла»; the prize was a 50-piece dinner service. Soon after, the publication was renamed and the newspaper «МузОБОЗ» legally ceased to exist. The same team, on the same base and without any interruption, began publishing the weekly «Музыкальная правда». In other words, the next issue of «МузОБОЗ» simply came out in a changed layout and with different imprint data (and on 25 September 1998 the TV-6 programme «МузОБОЗ» was renamed «Обоzzz-шоу»). Otar Kushanashvili formally remained editor-in-chief, but by order of the owner of the Publishing House, Evgeny Y. Dodolev, the functions of operational management were in fact performed by his friend and colleague Andrei Wolf. The newspaper began publishing critical materials about TV personalities. Materials about rock musicians and chamber-genre performers appeared, one of whom even titled the publication as an «organ». The publication was nominated for the national Russian music award «Овация», alongside the newspapers «Аргументы и факты» and «Комсомольская правда». In 1996 it became a laureate of the «Серебряная калоша» in the nomination «The softest publication of the year».
History
The weekly «Музыкальная правда» was registered in autumn 1994 by the Ministry of Press of the Russian Federation as the newspaper «МузОБОЗ» («Музыкальное обозрение»), as the organ of the television programme of the same name. Although the idea and the name «Музыкальная правда» arose, as the founders of the «рупор» assert, in the late 1980s. The design used elements of the TV programme «МузОБОЗ». The credo of the publication, like that of other youth tabloids, was declared explicitly — the so-called popsa. As in the television project of the same name, jazz, rock music and other serious directions were in fact ignored. The publication was born on the initiative of Ivan Demidov, founder and host of the «МузОБОЗ» programme. Evgeny Y. Dodolev, a former host of the «Взгляд» programme, became a partner in the project. On the recommendation of a long-time friend of both co-founders, music producer Yuri Aizenshpis, the scandalous TV host Otar Kushanashvili was appointed editor-in-chief of the new newspaper, for whom the founders of the newspaper were at that time employers (the journalist simultaneously appeared in the programme «Акулы пера» on TV-6 and published in Dodolev's publications). At the initial stage, «Музыкальная правда» wrote a lot about the creative plans of Ivan Demidov and his television team. Notable events in the history of the publication (anniversary, restyling, etc.) often became occasions for broadcasts of the programme «Партийная зона», which was hosted by the editor-in-chief of the weekly on the TV-6 channel, headed by the co-founder of «Музправда» (some celebratory episodes were hosted by Lera Kudryavtseva and Gosha Kutsenko). Besides the main print run (25,000 copies) produced by the Novy Vzglyad Publishing House, the newspaper «МузОБОЗ»/«Музыкальная правда» from the moment of its foundation appeared on Fridays (together with a television programme) as an independent insert in the city daily newspaper «Московская правда». In 1995 several issues were printed in A3 and A4 formats. In 2008 it also appeared in a colour version. Critics noted: «Музыкальная Правда» is oriented towards the teenage reader and communicates with him in his language, imitating a deliberately mischievous manner with an admixture of jargon and profanity. On the last page of «Музыкальной Правды», reports on events in academic music periodically appear. But these are purely informational materials, they are present here formally and are of a random nature. At the premiere ceremony of the «Серебряная калоша» award for the most dubious achievements in the field of show business, established by the «Серебряный дождь» radio station (26 April 1996): «The softest publication of the year» was recognised as the newspaper «МузОбоз», although among the contenders were «Экспресс-газета», the newspaper «Женские дела» and the magazine «Алла»; the prize was a dinner service of 50 pieces. The founder of the softest newspaper «МузОбоз», Mr Dodolev, was nowhere to be found, and the formidable Mr Nevsky came onto the proscenium. Despite protests, the dinner service was also destroyed by him. Soon after this, the publication was renamed and the newspaper «МузОБОЗ» legally ceased to exist. The same team and on the same base (without any interruption) began publishing the weekly «Музыкальная правда». In other words, the next issue of «МузОБОЗ» simply came out in a changed layout and with different imprint data (and on 25 September 1998 the TV-6 channel programme «МузОБОЗ» became known as «Обоzzz-шоу»). The editor-in-chief formally remained Otar Kushanashvili, but by order of the owner of the Publishing House Evgeny Y. Dodolev, the functions of operational management were in fact performed by his friend and colleague Andrei Wolf. The newspaper began publishing critical materials about TV personalities. Materials about rock musicians and performers of the chamber genre appeared, one of whom even titled the publication as an organ: I collect clippings from leading mass media sources. Here I found that the newspaper «Музыкальная правда» (this is the central organ for all organists) writes: «Too lyrical for rock, too jazzy for author's song, too intelligent for us, proletarians». The publication was nominated for the title of laureate of the national Russian music award «Овация». Since 1999, «Музыкальная правда» has appeared only as a Friday insert in the newspaper «Московская правда» (and is most often mentioned precisely in this context): it was decided not to print a separate run, since after the August 1998 default the situation in the print media industry was unfavourable and the weekly became a financial burden for its owner. Starting in 2005, the newspaper regularly published materials by M. Lesko and Kirill Razlogov about cinema, its correspondents were accredited at all notable film festivals of the world. The rubricator: «Музыкальная правда» (formerly «Музобоз») is oriented towards the Russian music market. Rubrics: АNонсище; Nаши; Rазное; Sкандалы; Nаезд; Устами младенца (editorial mail); Nомерной; Last Week End.
