Overview
The Münchener Theologische Zeitschrift (MThZ) is a German-language scholarly journal covering the entire field of Catholic theology. It has been published since January 1950, initially four times a year, and is issued by the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU). The journal is a long-established venue for theological research in the German-speaking world, with contributions spanning biblical exegesis, church history, dogmatics, moral theology, Christian social ethics, fundamental theology, philosophy, liturgical studies, pastoral theology, religious education, and canon law. Over its history the MThZ has appeared under several publishers. Early volumes were published by Zink-Verlag in Munich, followed by the Verlag der Münchener Theologischen Zeitschrift, then by Hueber-Verlag in Munich until 1978, and by Pattloch in Aschaffenburg from 1979 to 1984. Since 1985 the journal has been published by EOS-Verlag at the Erzabtei St. Ottilien. Among its first editors were Michael Schmaus and Wilhelm Keilbach. The journal is currently edited by a team led by Thomas Schärtl-Trendel as editor-in-chief, together with Franz Xaver Bischof, Gerd Häfner, Bertram Stubenrauch, Martin Thurner, and Klaus Unterburger; Lukas Metz serves as an editorial staff member. The MThZ is closely tied to the Catholic Theological Faculty of LMU Munich, one of the oldest and largest Catholic theological faculties in Germany, which traces its origins to 1472. The faculty provides the institutional home for the journal, and its professors contribute to its editorial direction. Older volumes of the journal, from 1950 onward, are available open access through the Universitätsbibliothek of LMU Munich. From 2027 the journal will be published in a purely digital format, reflecting broader shifts in academic publishing toward online and open-access models. The journal serves as a platform for scholarly exchange in Catholic theology, publishing articles, reviews, and contributions that engage both traditional theological questions and contemporary challenges. Its readership includes theologians, clergy, students, and researchers in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and beyond. As a faculty journal, it also reflects the research profile of the Munich theological tradition, which emphasizes the integration of faith and critical thinking.
History
The Münchener Theologische Zeitschrift was founded in 1950, with its first issue appearing in January of that year. It was established as a German-language journal for the whole field of Catholic theology, published four times a year. Among the first editors were Michael Schmaus and Wilhelm Keilbach, both prominent theologians of the time. In its early decades the journal changed publishers several times. It was initially published by Zink-Verlag in Munich, then by the Verlag der Münchener Theologischen Zeitschrift, also in Munich. From there it moved to Hueber-Verlag in Munich, where it remained until 1978. From 1979 to 1984 it was published by Pattloch in Aschaffenburg. Since 1985 the journal has been published by EOS-Verlag, based at the Erzabtei St. Ottilien in St. Ottilien, Germany. The journal is issued by the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. This faculty is one of the oldest and largest Catholic theological faculties in Germany, with a history dating back to 1472. The faculty comprises eighteen chairs and professorships covering biblical exegesis, church history, dogmatics, moral theology, Christian social ethics, fundamental theology and philosophy, liturgical studies, pastoral theology, religious education, and canon law. The MThZ serves as a scholarly outlet for this broad theological spectrum. Over the decades, the journal has published contributions from numerous theologians and scholars, contributing to debates in Catholic theology in the German-speaking world. Its editorial team has included many faculty members. In recent years, the journal has embraced open access: older volumes from 1950 onward are available through the Universitätsbibliothek of LMU Munich. A further step toward digital publishing is planned for 2027, when the journal will appear in a purely digital format. The current editorial team is led by Thomas Schärtl-Trendel as editor-in-chief, with Franz Xaver Bischof, Gerd Häfner, Bertram Stubenrauch, Martin Thurner, and Klaus Unterburger as editors, and Lukas Metz as editorial staff. The journal continues to publish quarterly issues covering the full range of Catholic theology.
