Overview
Muifelbrouwerij is an independent Dutch microbrewery based in Oss, North Brabant, founded in 2006 by Martin Ostendorf. Ostendorf began homebrewing in 2002 in the fortified town of Megen, and after receiving his first order in 2006 he established the brewery. For more than a decade Muifelbrouwerij operated as a contract or 'rental' brewery without its own brewing installation, producing larger volumes in collaboration with breweries such as Sint Servattumus in Schijndel and De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, and brewing Muifel beers under licence at De Loonbrouwerij in Cothen and Thissen's brouwerij in Lith. In 2019 the brewery commissioned its own brewing kettles in Oss, and since then part of its production has taken place in-house. The brewery launched its first beer, Zuster Agatha, in 2007. That beer has won multiple awards, including gold in the barley wine category at the Dutch Beer Challenge in 2018 and silver in the same category in 2020, and was voted 'Lekkerste Bier van Brabant' (Tastiest Beer of Brabant) in a 2015 poll by the Brabants Dagblad. The range has since expanded to roughly 15 beers, with more than 10 one-off specials released each year. Well-known beers include D'n Ossekop (a blond), Broeder Everardus (a tripel named after Everardus Witte, the 'Holy Brother of Megen'), Muifel USA IPA (an IPA) and Zuster Agatha (a quadrupel), of which a limited wood-aged variant is brewed in winter. Muifelbrouwerij is a small operation with four employees. It competes in the Dutch specialty beer market and has earned recognition at the Dutch Beer Challenge across several styles: Nina's Black Metal BDIPA won bronze in the dark IPA category in 2022, Galaxy Baltic Porter won silver in the stout/porter category in 2025, and in 2026 I Spy Double Rye won gold in the bock/dubbelbock category while 1357 Dubbel took bronze in the light dark category. In 2026 I Spy Double Rye, a seasonal autumn dubbelbock of 8% ABV brewed with local rye from the Geffense Roggemaaiers and a bottom-fermenting yeast, was also awarded the Mitra Award as 'Beste Bier van Nederland' (Best Beer of the Netherlands) after scoring highest among all gold medal winners at the Dutch Beer Challenge, where 150 Dutch professional breweries competed with more than 400 beers. Owner Martin Ostendorf credited brewers Teun and Bart for the achievement. The beer is available from October, and the brewery holds events such as an Open Day where it can be tasted.
