Overview

MTV Germany is the German-language MTV television channel operated within Paramount Global’s international television portfolio. It launched on 7 March 1997 under the name MTV Central, when MTV Networks Europe was regionalizing its pan-European service and developing country- and language-specific channels. Before its launch, German-speaking viewers received MTV Europe in English, while the German market already had a strong domestic music-television competitor in VIVA. MTV Germany was therefore created both to localize the MTV brand and to compete more directly for audiences in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The original service combined German-language presentation with localized versions of established MTV formats. Its early schedule included music-video and chart programs such as Euro Top 20, MTV Select, MTV News, Non-Stop Hits, Hitlist Germany, Fashion Zone, MTV Urban and The Lick. In 1999 the channel became available free-to-air across Europe through Astra, giving it a distribution footprint beyond the core German-speaking territories. MTV Networks Germany subsequently launched MTV2 Pop in 2001 as a separate pop-music service; that channel was later replaced by Nickelodeon in the German portfolio. From 2002 onward, MTV Germany increasingly incorporated programming originating from MTV in the United States. Shows including Jackass, Date My Mom, Pimp My Ride and Dismissed were generally subtitled or dubbed for German audiences. This shift reflected a broader change in MTV’s television strategy: the channel moved away from being primarily a continuous music-video outlet and toward a mixed schedule of music, youth entertainment, reality programming and imported formats. In 2005, Viacom, MTV’s owner at the time, acquired VIVA’s parent company, changing the competitive structure of German music television. VIVA subsequently became the principal free-to-air music channel in the German MTV Networks portfolio for much of the following decade. MTV Germany also underwent further regionalization. Separate Austrian and Swiss versions of the German-speaking feed were developed during the second half of the 2000s, while the Berlin-based German operation continued to provide the core programming and brand infrastructure. The channel adopted shared MTV on-air identities, including the All Eyes On... presentation introduced in 2008, while retaining German-language music and entertainment programming. A major distribution change occurred on 1 January 2011, when MTV Germany moved from free-to-air distribution to subscription television on major German platforms. The pay-TV service was carried by operators including Sky Deutschland, Unitymedia, Kabel BW and Deutsche Telekom. During this period, the channel continued to commission or schedule localized music programming, including MTV Brand New, MTV Top 11, 3 From 1, The Breakfast Club, Fantastic Music Videos, M is for Music and MTV Home, alongside international reality and scripted series. High-definition simulcasts launched in 2011. The channel began returning to broader free-to-air distribution in 2017. A free, Germany-limited online stream was introduced on mtv.de, and a standard-definition feed was added to Astra 19.2° East on 24 November 2017. The renewed free-to-air service restored a larger selection of music blocks, including MTV Most Wanted, MTV Classics, MTV Rockzone, MTV Urban, MTV Likes and MTV Crush. Following VIVA’s closure on 31 December 2018, MTV Germany became the principal mainstream MTV-branded music television service remaining in Germany. Music videos accounted for most of its daily schedule in the period around 2018. In the 2020s, MTV Germany refreshed its international visual identity and reorganized its schedule around branded programming blocks.

History

MTV Germany originated in MTV Networks Europe’s mid-1990s regionalization program. Until 1997, German-speaking viewers primarily received MTV Europe in English, while VIVA provided a German 24-hour music channel. MTV Central launched on 7 March 1997 with German-language adaptations of MTV’s established chart, news, music and lifestyle formats. The service was designed to make the MTV brand more culturally and linguistically relevant in Germany while also competing with VIVA. The channel expanded its reach in 1999 when it became free-to-air throughout Europe on Astra. MTV Networks Germany also developed MTV2 Pop in 2001, a separate pop-music channel that later gave way to Nickelodeon within the group’s German channel strategy. Beginning in 2002, MTV Germany carried a growing number of programs produced for MTV US, including Jackass, Date My Mom, Pimp My Ride and Dismissed. Although the channel continued to use German presentation and localization, the programming mix increasingly emphasized imported reality and entertainment formats rather than uninterrupted music videos. Viacom’s 2005 acquisition of VIVA’s parent company brought the leading German music-television competitors under common ownership. MTV Germany continued operating as the more internationally oriented MTV service, while VIVA served as the major free-to-air music outlet for the group. During the second half of the decade, the German-speaking service was further divided into localized feeds for Austria and Switzerland. The Berlin operation remained central to programming and brand activity, and MTV Germany adopted shared European MTV visual identities. Its All Eyes On... presentation highlighted selected artists and groups in promotional material around commercial breaks. On 1 January 2011, MTV Germany moved behind a paywall on major German television platforms. This change reduced its free-to-air reach and ended advertising on the subscription service, but the channel continued to commission and schedule German-language music programming. Examples included MTV Brand New, MTV Top 11, 3 From 1, The Breakfast Club, Fantastic Music Videos, M is for Music and MTV Home. Imported reality and scripted programs remained important, and an HD simulcast became available in 2011. The channel’s distribution strategy changed again in 2017. MTV introduced a free online stream restricted to Germany and added a standard-definition free-to-air feed on Astra 19.2° East. The restored free service brought back or expanded music blocks such as MTV Most Wanted, MTV Classics, MTV Rockzone, MTV Urban, MTV Likes and MTV Crush. VIVA Top 100 transferred to MTV and was renamed MTV Top 100. VIVA’s closure at the end of 2018 further increased MTV Germany’s importance within the German music-television market. A related timeshare service, MTV+, occupied the evening and overnight schedule on Nickelodeon Germany from November 2018 until March 2021, when it was replaced by Comedy Central +1. In September 2021 MTV Germany adopted the contemporary MTV international branding. A substantial schedule revision in 2022 revived or introduced blocks covering rock, alternative, dance, rap, chart history and general music rotation, including RockZone, Alternative Nation, Headbangers Ball, Yo! MTV Raps, Dancefloor, Party Zone, Chill Out Zone, MTV In The Mix and Guess the Year. In 2023, decade-focused blocks such as MTV 80s, MTV 90s and MTV 00s joined Brand New, MTV All Nighter and This Week’s Hot 20. The channel’s later evolution reflected the wider contraction of music-video television. On 11 August 2025, most music-video blocks were reportedly withdrawn without a prior formal announcement. MTV In The Mix initially absorbed much of the remaining music schedule, while several decade and retrospective blocks continued. On 31 December 2025, MTV Germany reportedly stopped music-video broadcasting altogether and shifted toward reality and scripted series. Despite that change, the MTV Germany channel remained on air and continued to operate as a localized MTV-branded television service.
