Overview
M.S.R.V. Saurus (Maastrichtse Studenten Roeivereniging Saurus) is a Dutch student rowing club based in Maastricht. Founded on 27 May 1983 by a group of students who believed the young university city needed a student rowing association, it has grown into the largest student sports association in Maastricht and one of the city's larger student associations, with approximately 450 members. The club's primary aim is the practice of rowing, pursued at all levels from recreational paddling in a C4+ to competitive rowing at the international top. The name Saurus is derived from the Mosasaurus, a voracious Maas monster discovered in the marl near Maastricht and named after the city. The club's flag, like the Maastricht flag, is red with a white star in the centre; within the star the silhouette of a rower can be discerned. The blade and rowing kit are red with a white star, the star appearing on the back of the kit. Saurus has its boathouse and sociëteit at one location on the Zuid-Willemsvaart. It organises the Saurus International Regatta, included since 2018 in the NOOC competition. Notable rowers include Daniël Mensch, who won a silver medal in Athens in 2004 in the Holland Acht.
History
M.S.R.V. Saurus was founded on 27 May 1983 by a group of students who felt that the young university city of Maastricht needed a student rowing association. They chose the name Saurus, derived from the Mosasaurus, an all-devouring Maas monster discovered in the marl near Maastricht and named after the city. In the years that followed, Saurus grew into the largest student sports association in Maastricht and one of Maastricht's most prominent student associations in general. The flag of Saurus, like the Maastricht flag, is red with a white star in the centre; in the star the silhouette of a rower can be seen. The blade of Saurus is red with a white star, as is the rowing kit, with the star on the back. In the early years, a small shed could be rented from the Maastrichtsche Watersportclub, the citizen rowing club of Maastricht. Two years later, the Netherlands' first astronaut Wubbo Ockels opened the first Saurus shed on the Maas. However, the rowing water of the Maas is not optimal for racing boats and their rowers, so it was decided to also open a shed at the beginning of the Zuid-Willemsvaart. This shed, called Jojo-loods, is located in the Belvédère harbour, named after the former Jojo-Haven. Two sheds far apart proved not ideal, and after long tug-of-war, in 2006 the shed on the Paardenwei, also on the Zuid-Willemsvaart, was opened by mayor Gerd Leers. This shed is large enough to house both the racing and competition fleet, and rowers of all levels can again practise the sport from the same shed. In September 2010, construction began on a permanent building on the same site. This building contains, besides the boat shed, a fitness room, changing rooms, board and committee rooms, and a canteen. It was taken into use in 2011. In addition to a boat shed on the Zuid-Willemsvaart, Saurus had its own sociëteit in the city centre since its 7th dies natalis. The sociëteit was closed with the completion of the new housing. Saurus now has its boat shed and sociëteit in one location. Within Saurus there are year clubs, committees, two gentlemen's societies: Librium and Sunergos, as well as three ladies' societies: Nynève, Linque and Copidia. There are also two verticals: gentlemen's vertical Viramitas and ladies' vertical Vivaeda. Since 1986 Saurus has rowed at competition level. In 1988 Gijs Kloek and René Knol won the first three medals for Saurus at the ARB and Slotwedstrijden. Since then there have been many successes in racing boats, including: a highlight is the silver medal of Daniël Mensch, won in Athens in 2004 in the Holland Acht. Mensch had earlier won the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta twice with the Holland Acht; Dominique van der Pauw, 2005, Dutch Champion in the 4-; Dirk Evers and Maarten Edie, 2005, European Student Champion in Cardiff in the 2x; First-year Lightweight, 2007, Royal Holland Beker/World Cup on the Bosbaan in the 4+; Third place in the 'Oude Vier', the main event of the Varsity, 2022; Luc Cornielje and Nykle Krijgsveld, 2022, Dutch Champion in the 8+. Every year in June, Saurus organised its own race, the Maasregatta, rowed on the Maas between the Servaasbrug and the rowing shed. The race was also rowed under the name Ridder Regatta and Fortis Maasregatta. This race was last organised in 2011. Since 2014 Saurus has organised a race on its own rowing water, the Saurus International Regatta. The focus of this race is on Dutch and international competition teams. The race has been included in the NOOC competition since 2018.
